New Episode LIVE now!-At The Yard Podcast
LATHROP, CALIF. - The Second Annual California State Games moved into the simulated competition portion of the event with three groups participating in simulated competitions that featured live pitching against hitters.
With three groups on hand throughout the day there were plenty of players that left an impression on our team of scouts. Below we take a look at some of the standouts from Day Two of the California State Games.
‘21 LHP Andrew Barger - Buchanan HS - Showed very well for himself on the mound where he attacked hitters with a fastball/curveball mix that resulted in weak contact and several strikes on the day. Showed feel for the changeup although it’s still a work in progress. Works down in the zone consistently.
Lots to like from ‘21 LHP Andrew Barger of @Buchanan_Bears. Pounds down in the zone with FB/CB mix while showing flashes of feel for the CH. #CAStateGames #ShapeTheState #BeSeen @PBR_California pic.twitter.com/JlUH7pk4gV

‘21 OF/RHP Timothy Reeve - Truckee HS - Showed he’s the type of player every winning college roster is littered with. High level competitor who didn’t give an inch at the plate or the mound where he touched 87mph with the fastball with nothing straight out of the hand. Attacks hitters with a true 3-pitch mix - FB/CB/SP - that he’s able to command for strike consistently.
‘21 OF/RHP Timothy Reeve of Truckee HS showing a good 3-pitch mix w/FB 86-87, CB 68-70, SP 76-78. K, K, K, INF 1B. #ShapeTheState #BeSeen #CAStateGames @PBR_California pic.twitter.com/j7lz5L0KEU

‘21 OF Jake Hamman - Chico HS - Put together a couple really quality at-bats during his teams portion of the day after showing very well at the plate during the workout portion of the event. Shows very good barrel control with awareness of the strike zone. There’s some present bat speed with developing power that projects well for his future on the diamond.
Good piece here from ‘21 OF Jake Hamman IG Chico HS. Ran a 6.98 and pounded balls yesterday during workout and carried that over today. Very intriguing player. #CAStateGames #ShapeTheState #BeSeen @PBR_California pic.twitter.com/3LHrHFZsQy

‘23 SS Ian Halverson - Mission Vista HS - One of the top uncommitted 2023 players in the state, Halverson was on a mission to show that his advanced metrics during his BP round weren’t a fluke and he certainly didn’t disappoint. Hit a missile of a home run over the left field fence that was a no doubter once it left the bat. Next at-bat he smoked a ball in the gaps for a standup double. In every viewing we’ve had of Halverson all he has done is hit.

‘21 C Blake Penso - Huntington Beach HS - As far as uncommitted hitters go in this class you’re going to be hard pressed to find many better than Penso. All he has done since the spring is hit and that continued on Day One as he smashed a BOMB to left field. He’s a patient and selective hitter who doesn’t waste at-bats while trying to make the most of every offensive opportunity. Was stellar behind the dish where his arm strength could be the carrying tool.

‘21 RHP Bryce Bond - Sierra Canyon HS - The obvious thing you see when you see Bond now is his commitment to the weight room and his body. He’s leaner, stronger, and more durable since we last saw him. He attacked hitters with a fastball/curveball combination that resulted in four strikeouts in his first two innings of work. He worked down in the zone with both pitches, while the somewhat unorthodox delivery caused uncomfortable at-bats for hitters.
‘21 RHP Bryce Bond of Sierra Canyon working 83-85 FB, 66-69 CB in his two innings with 4 K’s. #CAStateGames #ShapeTheState #BeSeen @PBR_California pic.twitter.com/8KK9qd8SBX

‘21 RHP Dylan Alanis - Damien HS - Alanis was at our Preseason All-State event where he showed his clean arm action that has some whippiness to it. At the California State Games he showed the significant gains he’s made since then. Working 85-87 mph with the fastball, it was his 70-72 mph sliger and 78 mph changeup that really stood out resulting in a clean first two innings of work that saw him register 5 strikeouts and not allow a hit. It’s a strong frame that can add more mass adding to his future projection.

‘22 C/OF Andrew Violet - Fullerton HS - Is a player that is going to make a college coach happy one day. A consistent player in his offensive approach, Violet showed consistent gap line drives with the occasional pull side power shot during his BP session of the workout portion of the event which he carried over during the simulated competition portion. He smoked a ball to left field for a standup double showing some bat speed and the ability to manipulate the barrel plane.
‘22 C/OF Andrew Violet of #FullertonHS with a one-hop standup double. Showed some pop during BP yesterday too. Athletic player with position versatility. #ShapeTheState #BeSeen #CAStateGames @PBR_California pic.twitter.com/QNJdkfXa9u

‘21 OF Jack Hamman - Chico HS - Showed the type of bat speed and ability to manipulate the barrel that is desirable on the college level. Pounded ball to all fields during BP showing his obviuos strength before taking that same “attack the ball” approach during the simulated competition portion of the event. Sub 7 runner who can play either corner spot in the outfield.
Good piece here from ‘21 OF Jake Hamman IG Chico HS. Ran a 6.98 and pounded balls yesterday during workout and carried that over today. Very intriguing player. #CAStateGames #ShapeTheState #BeSeen @PBR_California pic.twitter.com/3LHrHFZsQy

‘21 RHP Christian Williams - Buchanan HS - Williams has the type of long, lean, high waisted, long limbed projectable frame that will make him a desirable recruit. Mix in his ability on the mound and he’s a no brainer in that regard. Working 82-84 mph with the fastball, Williams mixed in a sharp, late breaking curveball that resulted in consistent weak rollovers. Uber projectable, Williams should and will be a highly sought after pitcher in due time.
‘21 RHP Christian Williams of @Buchanan_Bears has been really good through 2 IP. Pounds his FB 82-84 down while mixing in a sharp, biting CB at 70-73. Lots to like here. #ShapeTheState #BeSeen #CAStateGames @PBR_California pic.twitter.com/H9fgan8ncj
— ??? ?????? (@LesLukach) August 15, 2020
‘21 RHP Jack McKay - St. Ignatius HS - McKay came out firing pumping 88 mph running fastballs in his first inning of action. Settled in at 86-88 mph for the rest of his outing that also featured a nasty, late diving slider at 70-73 mph. Registered a total of six strikeouts in his three inning outing.
‘21 RHP Jack McKay of St. Ignatious HS is a guy to follow. Worked 86-88 FB, 70-73 SL. K, K, F8, K in first inning. #ShapeTheState #BeSeen #CAStateGames @PBR_California pic.twitter.com/Y2dZ7d8WnC
— ??? ?????? (@LesLukach) August 15, 2020
‘21 LHP Sam Winkles - Acalanes HS - Winkles was an eye opener during his outing that saw him fan four while allowing no hits in three innings pitched. Showed a very good changeup at 70-73 mph that flashes late diving action away from righties. The pitch has plus potential in the future while his curveball shows depth and tight spin at 70-73 mph.
‘21 LHP Sam Winkles of @AcalanesDonsBB showing a true three-pitch mix w/FB at 82-84 FB, 72-74 CH, 70-73 CB. Four K’s, no hits in 3 IP. #ShapeTheState #BeSeen #CAStateGames @PBR_California @ZootsBaseball pic.twitter.com/rr1JM7J837

‘21 RHP Christian Becerra - Harvard Westlake HS - Becerra has made the type of gains that DI coaches love to see in earlier commits. A Cal-Berkelely commit, Becerra was dominant in his outing working 88-89 mph with the fastball which is a noticeable gain since our last viewing. Despite that, it was his slider at 80-83 mph and his curveball at 76-80 mph that really stood out. He showed the type of command of the pitches that you would see with a weekend college starter early in his career.
‘21 RHP Christian Becerra of @hwbaseball and a @CalBaseball commit. Working 88-89 FB, 76-80 CB, 80-83 SL in his first IP. 3 K’a and INF 1B. #ShapeTheState #BeSeen #CAStateGames @PBR_California pic.twitter.com/97crFkzY36
