After winning Jesuit’s first state championship since 2000, the head coach of the Tiger’s baseball program Richie Warren has stepped down to become the new head coach for Berkley Prep. The move comes as a surprise for many. Warren, a 2000 graduate of Jesuit and a starting pitcher on its 2000 state championship team, took over the program in 2006 for John Crumbley and had an impressive run of success.
Over the past 5 years, Warren led the Jesuit program to the FHSAA Final Four 5 times. This past season may have been Coach Warren’s best as he pulled his team through a tumultuous season when 9 players, which included college signees and commitments were kicked off the team in March after a road trip in which school rules were violated at a team hotel.
During an interview that Richie Warren did with Prep Baseball Report, Coach Warren was asked about the adversity his team had to overcome. Coach Warren said, “We made sure our players understood that our expectation as coaches never changed for them. Everyone wrote us off, local and national media, people in the community, people in our own halls, but our kids believed in themselves and trusted each other”.
Warren takes over for Justin Houston who was at the helm of the Berkeley Prep program for the last 8 seasons. Berkeley Prep went 17-14 this past season reaching the 4A Region Finals. Warren inherits a Berkeley Prep team that will return 14 players from its varsity roster, which includes 2015’s Nicholas Kavouklis and Anthony Pelligrino.
