Atlee Raiders Scout Day: Quick Hits

We take a look at just over half a dozen players from the Atlee Raiders baseball program. Video and notes were compiled at the Atlee High School Scout Day and we took notice of some things you can expect from Atlee come spring.

Benjamin Atkinson RHP / Atlee, VA / 2026Atkinson stands at 6-foot-4, 200-pounds and the frame could still hold some good weight. Long limbs, slower pace to the delivery, and light effort. The arm action is short on the backside, three-quarter to slightly lower three-quarter slot, and has average armspeed. Whippy release and some funk with a slightly different look. It is a lower spin, sinker makeup to the upper 70's fastball. The mid 60's breaking ball is slurvy in shape and displayed the ability to land it for strikes.

Chase Blumberg RHP / Atlee, VA / 2026Like the athletic makeup for the 5-foot-11 sophomore. Seems a bit longer than listed height and has some proportional strength throughout the frame. At the plate it is a wider base, simple load, short to contact, and level path. Had a line drive single in game. On the mound Blumberg showed well. Normal pace to delivery with some late intent. Three-quarter arm action with slightly above average arm speed. The fastball got up to 81 mph and showed two breaking balls. The curveball was at 67-68 mph with gradual 11/5 shape and the other had more cutter/short slider shape in the low 70's. The cutter/slider had better arm speed and more finishing traits.

Chase Chamberlain C / 2B / Atlee, VA / 2025Listed at 5-foot-10, 170-pounds, Chamberlain has leaned out really well and has some functional strength. Square setup, works up and against the front side, hands stay tight, and the swing has more line drive/inside out feel to it. The Atlee junior uses the middle and backside well with a more contact driven swing and approach. Behind the plate, Chamberlain has the chance to be a three year starter come spring 2024. Handles the staff really well, is active in the throwing game with a quick short exchange to release and slightly above average arm strength.

Owen Goble OF / 1B / Atlee, VA / 2026Projectable 6-foot-2, 165-pound frame. Strong lower half, strong v-cut frame up top with some strength in the shoulders and back. Has a chance to be one of the better offensive pieces for this Atlee team in the long term. Solid bat and hand speed through the zone with some power potential gap to gap. Would say above average runner, gets out of the box well, and tighter turn on the bag. Was a little dinged up last spring and has a chance to be a big part of a young, maturing Atlee team in 2024.

Will Haynie SS / 3B / Atlee, VA / 2026Personally, a big fan of guys who can defend in the dirt, and Haynie was an easy one to be intrigued by last spring. Started at shortstop for a majority of the year and was pretty unfazed by the varsity stage as a freshman. Hands work, fluid actions, and above average arm strength across the infield. At the plate it is a whippy barrel through the zone with some slight uphill tilt. Works mostly gap to gap and is more contact driven, hit tool type of bat. Haynie is one of the better defenders in the Richmond area and made a couple of highlight type of plays during the Atlee Scout Day. His stock will continue to trend up as he progresses in the box and the run tool improves.

Parker McRay LHP / OF / Atlee, VA / 2024On multiple occasions in the past few weeks, McRay has impressed on the mound. Not an overpowering arm, but pitches. Moves the low 80's fastball in and out, throws two offspeed pitches for strikes, and has the ability to expand the zone when ahead. While the breaking ball can certainly get some swings and misses and finish counts, it's bigger, gradual shape lends it to more of a get over, early count offering to allow him to get hitters off of the fastball. Of the two offspeed pitches, my personal favorite was the changeup. Works mostly in the 73-75 mph range, throws it with conviction, and has some hard arm side fade that got some uncomfortable swings and chases late in counts.

Noah Yoder RHP / 1B / Atlee, VA / 2025For the past 15-18 months, Yoder has been one of the most dominating young arms in the state. Not a polished arm, not a command arm, but an arm that hitters do not want to face. What the Duke commit has lacked in command and polish, he certainly has made up for in the stuff department. The funk, deceptiveness, and uncomfortability still exists while the command has gotten better. Up to 93 mph with the fastball, worked it at the bottom and the top, as well as to both sides. Tended to be towards the open side and did not really show command of the inner half, but with the way he closes off and the ball jumps at you out of the hand, the outside edge is still tough to cover. More so than the fastball command, the ability to land the breaking ball has improved. It is still probably slightly below average command and just more so throws it over the plate, but the upper 70's power breaker is a tough, tough look, especially at the high school level. Bigger 12/6 that gets up and down, and when in the middle to arm side half of the plate, it will back up which makes it a nearly unhittable pitch for a high school hitter. Still two pitches with average to below average command, but right now, he doesn't need to have 55< command because the stuff will allow him to dominate in the zone.
