Arkansas State Invitational; Day 1 Recap

We kicked off the Arkansas State Invitational on Thursday. We managed to get two games in before, canceling the remainder of the day with heavy rain, bearing down from Tropical Depression Cindy.
Marion Toppers 4 vs Fat City 3
Marion defeated Fat City in a game with two big innings and a battle between pitching staffs.
Marion scored 3 in the 3rd as 2016 C Blake Daniels doubled, followed by a RBI triple by 2017 C Andrew Lannon. Lannon scored on a passed ball to push the lead to 2-0. The Toppers capped of the busy 3rd when LHP/1B Payton Lannon singled to drive in 2017 MIF Nick Alsbrook who drew a walk.
The game moved along in with no score until the 6th. Jamison Bridges reached, followed by CJ Cleary’s single. After a fielder’s choice, Will Doggett singled to left driving in two runs and scored on Jarron Brantley single.
In the bottoms of the 6th Marion answered with a run of their own, 2017 MIF Nick Alsbrook was hit by a pitch, he stole second and scored the go ahead run, when Payton Lannon singled.
Lannon came on in relief to close the game out and worked an effective 7th inning to pick up the save.
2018 RHP Bryce Towery picked up the no a no decision, throwing 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits, 5 strike outs. 2017 RHP Gavin Stone picked up the win cleaning up the 6th inning, with 2 strike outs and a single surrendered.
RHP Dalton Pool was solid for Fat City as he challenged hitters consistently pounding the strike zone with two pitches consistently.
El Dorado 4 vs Sticks 17U 3
El Dorado defeated Sticks Baseball Academy 17U 4-3. The game looked to be a slugfest after the first as both offense came out with production.
Sticks 17U open the first with four consecutive hits, 2019 MIF Evan Stewart drove in a run with a single, followed by consecutive singles which scored Stewart.
El Dorado stormed back in the bottom of the 1st. The big blow in the 1st came from 2019 MIF Dereck Jobe who tripled with 2 RBIs. He later scored on a passed ball to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead.
2019 RHP Jacob Boshears and 2020 RHP Robert Bavon settled in over the next few innings shutting down the offenses.
In the 4th the Sticks tied the game 3-3 when 2019 C Patrick Donlon singled and drove in a run.
El Dorado scored 1 in the bottom of the 5th to take a 4-3 lead as 2019 RHP/INF Jacob Boshears reached on an error and scored on by Daniel Johnson.
The game was called with 10 min left in the contest in the bottom of the 5th, due to impending weather.
2019 RHP Jacob Boshears picked up the win throwing 5 innings allowing 6 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 2. His fastball worked 76-78 mph, his curveball was thrown 63-66 mph and his changeup worked 70-72 mph.
2020 RHP Robert Bavon picked up the loss throwing 4 2/3 innings allowing 4 runs on 4 hits while striking out 4. He showed a quick loose arm. His fastball worked 78-81 mph, he also threw a curveball 67-68 mph and a changeup 75 mph.
Rain Delay
We have postponed the games until Friday evening. Our goal is to play the remaining games on the Thursday docket Friday night. Friday’s games will be pushed to Saturday and Saturday’s games will be pushed to Sunday.
This is a tentative plan as we have to see how the weather looks tomorrow morning. We are planning on making an announcement of tomorrow night’s game by 12:00 PM tomorrow.
