ArkLaTex Tournament: Game Recaps Day 1

The ArkLaTex open kicked off Thursday with an open work out with 36 players from Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Friday we moved into the games portion of the week end. Six teams total will be competing at Louisiana Tech University, throughout the week end. This year the 6 teams come from two organizations, the Louisiana Knights and Sticks Baseball Academy. All teams are 16U or below featuring some very talented underclassmen.

GAME 1 - LOUISIANA KNGHTS 16U GREEN VS. STICKS 2020
Louisiana Knights 16U Green defeat Sticks Baseball 2020 5-2 in game one of the day at the Arklatex Open. 2019 RHP Hunter Duhon picked up the win for the Knights pitching 6 ⅓ innings scattering 9 hits, striking out 5, and allowing 0 earned runs. He showed the ability to locate 2 pitches for a strike consistently. His fastball worked 77-82 mph and his curveball was 68-70 mph with 11/5 shape and gradual break.
Offensively the Knights were paced by 2020 OF/1B Michael Latulas who was 3-3 on the day. Latulas showed bat speed and a feel for the barrel while swinging with intent. 2019 MIF Zane Berry had a big hit in the 5th to drive in a run during the Knights 5 run 5th inning. Berry showed solid defensive actions playing through the baseball, he used a smooth transition and an accurate arm with carry.
The Sticks received a competitive pitching performance from 2020 RHP Jace Presley. Presley pitched 4 ⅓ innings taking the loss. He allowed hits and 3 runs all unearned, while striking out 1 and walking 3. Offensively a balanced attack with 7 players recording a hit 2020 MIF John Satterfield, 2020 RHP Jace Presley, and 2020 MIF Keelan Hodge all had 2 hits.

GAME 2 - STICKS BASEBALL 2019 VS LOUISIANA KNIGHTS 16U GREEN
Sticks Baseball 2019 defeated Louisiana Knights 16U Green 16U in a high scoring affair. The Sticks scored 10 runs on 6 hits and 6 walks. They were led offensively by 2019 LHP/CIF Zach Morris who was 1-3 with 3 RBIs on the afternoon.
The Knights got out of the gate well scoring 4 in the first, and 1 in the 3rd to build a 5-1 lead after 3 innings of play. The Sticks manufactured 2 runs in the 4th to cut the deficit to 5-3. They picked up their first hit of the contest in the 5th and rolled through the inning scoring 7 runs while sending 13 hitters to the plate.
The Knights didn’t go away quietly answering with 4 runs of their own in the 5th. Both bullpens shut the scoring down in the 6th and 7th to reach the final.
2019 OF/RHP Chandler Hay pitched 2 innings allowing 1 hit while walking 1 and striking out 1 to pick up the 6 out save for the Sticks. 2019 MIF/RHP Carson Byrd worked 2 innings in relief for the Knight he did not allow a hit and struck out 1.
Offensively for the Knights 2019 MIF Skipper Snypes impressed collecting 3 hits including a double he also scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Game 3 Sticks Baseball 16U vs Louisiana Knights 15U Black
Sticks Baseball opened with 2 runs in the top of the 1st 2019 INF/OF Justin Holland started the game with a double followed by a single by 2019 INF Same West and a RBI single by 2019 CIF/OF Nick Ward. West scored on a double play to work get the Knights out of a jam.
The Knights scored 1 in the 1st taking advantage of 3 walks including one drawn by 2020 CIF/RHP Brock Barthelemy to score the first run.
In the second scoring for both sides continued as the Sticks tacked on 2 more runs 2019 INF Sawyer Webb and 2019 OF Cole Kelly went back to back doubles to start the inning, Kelly scored on a single by 2019 INF/OF Justin Holland. The Knights added 5 in the 2nd to take a 6-4 lead, the big blow coming from 2020 OF Matthew Bihm as he hit a double which drove in 3.
In the top of the 3rd the Sticks regained the lead scoring 6 runs on 5 hits. In the bottom of the 3rd the Knights answered with 3 of their own taking advantage of a hit batter and an error. The Knights took the lead for good in the 4th as they scored 2. 2020 OF Matthew Bihm drove in a run with a triple and later scored on 2020 C/SS Peyton Sybryant’s single. Score was 11-10 after 4 complete.
The 1 run lead was all 2021 RHP Gavin Schulz would need. He pitched 4 shutout innings allowing just 2 hits with 2 strikeouts. He kept hitters off balance with a two pitch mix of a fastball and solid curveball with early break.
2020 OF Matthew Bihm was impressive with his advanced strength and bat speed he finished the day 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs and a triple.

GAME 4 - LOUISIANA KNIGHTS 16U BLACK VS STICKS BASEBALL 2019
The Louisiana Knights 16U Black defeated Sticks Baseball 2019 6-3 in game 4 of the ArkLaTex Open Tournament.
The Sticks put up 2 runs in the first, 2019 OF Alex Cauley singled, followed by a double by 2019 C John Hoskyn, Hoskyn later scored a groundball by 2019 LHP/CIF Zach Morris.
The Knights answered with a run 2019 OF Carter Quinn doubled and scored on a ground ball by 2019 MIF KC Hunt. In the 3rd they added 2 runs, 2019 MIF Garrett Felix reached on an error, 2019 MIF Carson Jones, doubled followed by 2019 OF Carter Quinn singled in both runs to push the score to 3-2.
The Sticks tied the game when 2019 MIF Zane Cox drove in 2019 C/3B William Poppy who reached on error.
The Knights took the lead in the bottom 4th when 2019 CIF Owen Hnatyshyn drove in 2019 C Hayden Travinski with a sac fly. They tacked on 2 more runs in the 6th as 2019 OF Carter Quinn singled to lead off the inning followed by 2019 MIF KC Hunt’s triple. Hunt scored on 2019 C Hayden Travinski’s ground ball to reach the final score of 6-3.
The pitching in this matchup was solid with three quality 2019 pitchers that are uncommitted.
2019 LHP Chandler Best picked up the win pitching 4 ⅓ innings allowing 2 earned runs, surrendering just 3 hits with 3 strikeouts and 3 walks. 2019 RHP Thomas Wilhite came in, in relief throwing an efficient 2 ⅓ innings where he allowed just 1 hit and 0 runs while striking out 2 hitters.
2019 LHP Zach Morris was competitive for the Sticks working 6 innings, allowing just 6 hits, 4 earned runs, while striking out 2 and 1 walk.
