TEAM NOTES
#1 Hamilton (9-1)
#3 Tucson (9-3)
The Tucson Badgers came to the Valley this past week and showed well in the Boras Classic. We featured Tucson High in our Game of the Week on Wednesday vs Red Mountain, where the Badgers put on a stellar offensive performance against another top 5 program in the state. Tucson proved that their offense can hurt you from top to bottom, and they're skilled on the mound/defensively. Over the weekend, the Badgers suffered a big loss for the time being, as GCU commit Nick Arias left the game with a knee injury and is expected to miss some time. But with hopes to get Arias back by the playoffs, Tucson should be one of the team atop the standings and a group you do not want to run into. They have veteran talent and leadership all around the diamond, that will play together, and play hungry with something prove.
Runs Scored: 86
Runs Allowed: 51
#9 Liberty (7-5)
The Liberty Lions are the reigning 6A State Champions, and doing their best to defend that title with a target on their back. The Lions are currently down one of their offensive leaders, Kolby Felix, due to a hand/wrist injury, and they're missing his bat. They've been able to grind out some victories without him, leaning on some younger prospects, and senior Ty Thurman. Senior RHP Traig Oughton turned in an outstanding performance against a top program from Nevada in Basic, doing what he could to keep their offense at bay, and give his offense a chance to win them a ball game. Sophomore Austin "Max" Charles is one of the leaders on this team on both sides of the ball, and he had a great weekend in the Boras Classic at the plate. Sophomore RHP/3b Gerardo Gonzalez has been forced to take some time off on the mound do to some injuries, but is expected to get back on the mound any time now, which should give the Lions some more life and put them in a good spot to make a tournament run. Liberty started the spring in the #4 spot, and have slowly dropped down to #9, but this team is no slouch, and is a threat whenever they take the field.#15 Canyon Del Oro (9-5)
NR Pusch Ridge (8-1)
Pusch Ridge is one of our new "Bubble Teams" that deserves to be mentioned. This is our highest ranked 3A team, and they've shown well on both sides of the ball and showing they can be a complete team. They have two high level arms in their pitching rotation that can compete against any offense in the state. Senior Alessandro Castro (Nevada) and sophomore Andres Castro have what it takes on the mound to be a State contending 1-2 punch, and have both been succeeding with the bat as well. The Lions exploded for 37 runs on the road vs Empire on March 8th in a shutout victory. They have put up more than 10 runs in 4 of their games this year, and shutout opposing offenses 3 times already in 2022. Watch out for Pusch Ridge and expect to see them making a title run in the 3A conference.
