Raymond – Friday the Prep Baseball Report Mississippi traveled to campus of Raymond High School, as the panthers of Amory faced off in a first round playoff matchup versus the Raymond Rangers. Although Raymond scored three runs in the seventh inning, it would not be enough to defeat Amory, as they would claim a 11-3 victory.

Aubrey Gillentine, 2018 RHP (Amory) a University of Southern Mississippi recruit got the start for the panthers and was impressive through six innings. Gillentine pitched consistently in the mid 80’s range with FB that had good arm side action and displayed two off-speed pitches. The breaking ball had good late movement at times and a change-up that disrupted the timing of the Raymond hitters. Gillentine pitched six innings, surrendering zero runs, three hits, striking out six, and only walked one Raymond hitter.

Amory secured the victory thanks to a strong defensive performance by the entire panthers line up. Hunter Lockhart, 2018 Catcher (Amory) uncommitted, had a good game behind the dish as he received balls with firm hands and moved well getting in good blocking position with a strong accurate arm on throws to second base. Another strong defensive performance was had by Jake Williams, 2019 SS (Amory) uncommitted, although going 0-3 at the plate he displayed good balance and rhythm and seemed to find barrel all night. Defensively Williams looked smooth playing short, displaying decent range and a good arm strength with carry across diamond from a ¾ arm slot.

Eldeshun Miller, 2019 1B (Raymond) lead the offensive charge for the Rangers, as he was the only hitter with a multi-hit day going 2-4. Miller is a strong, physical looking kid with some bat speed and has potential to hit for power. Javonte Dorris, 2017 SS (Raymond), a Hinds Community College recruit, only had one hit on the night but had a simple approach and showed some bat speed at times. Dorris displayed his soft hands defensively and a strong arm with carry to first base.

Armory’s strong offensive performance would eventually lead the panthers to victory after bringing in Davis Helton, 2019 RHP (Amory) uncommitted. Helton threw from an over-top arm slot that got downhill, with a loose and easy arm action. Although, Helton and the panthers would give up three runs in the seventh, the big inning by the Ranger would prove not to be enough as the Amory Panthers hold on to win 11-3.
