March 30, 2019
Saturday, March 30
The Hoover Bucs won the Buccaneer Classic in dominating fashion, beating Houston (TN) 11-1.
Hoover was dominant from the first pitch, as the host Bucs would go on to win the championship of the Buccaneer Classic 11-1 over the Houston High School Mustangs (Germantown, TN). The Bucs got a great start from 2021 Austin Cornelius. The lanky righty threw 5 innings (CG) and struck out 7, allowing 1 ER on 4 hits and 2 walks.
The Bucs jumped on the Mustangs early, hanging a 4 spot in the first inning courtesy of a 2 RBI triple to LF by 2020 OF Robby Ashford. Ashford would come around to score on a sac fly from 2020 Colson Lawrence. 2020 Lawrence Hammonds also collected an RBI single in the inning.
After the Mustangs responded with a run in the top of the 2nd, Hoover answered with back to back RBI singles from 2021 Evan Radford and Hammonds in the bottom of the 3rd to push the lead to 6-1.
Hoover would blow the game open in the bottom of the 4th, as 2019 Alabama signee Peyton Wilson singled to open the inning and stole 2 bases. He and 2019 Trey Harry would come in to score on a double off the CF wall from 2019 Daniel Swatek. Radford delivered an RBI double and Hammonds added another single before a balk brought in the 11th run of the game for the Bucs.
