Over the past few weeks Prep Baseball Report Louisiana has looked at in-state recruiting classes across Louisiana. Today we switch gears for a second and take a look at five players that will be playing their collegiate careers at universities outside the boarders of Louisiana.
Dayton Dugas, OF, Sam Houston HS
A Wichita State signee with a 6-foot-3, 225-pound frame from Lake Charles, LA. Extremely physical frame, and obvious present strength. Outstanding overall athlete that runs the 60 in 6.6 seconds. Quality defender that is a plus runner with instincts, tracking speed, to go with arm strength and carry on throws. Right-handed hitter with a quiet lower half, he is efficient in his movements and has a short, compact swing with loads of bat speed and strength at contact. The total package of size, speed, arm strength and raw power make him an interesting prospect to follow for this year’s draft, if the tools start to play more consistently the ceiling can be very high for him.
Braden Comeaux, SS/2B, Barbe HS
A Texas Christian signee with a 6-foot, 160-pound frame from Lake Charles, LA. Lean, athletic build with room to get stronger. Right-handed hitter with quick hands, short compact stroke with the bat path staying flat throughout the zone and some present bat speed. A quality runner (6.80) with good instincts as a defender, takes good angles, with good footwork, understands hops, and has a quick first step. Fast-twitch athlete that will need to get stronger, but already is a very polished player.
Bryant Bowen, C, Captain Shreve HS
A Southern Miss signee with a 6-foot, 200 pound frame from Shreveport, LA. Strong compact build, with clear present strength. Right-handed hitter with a rotational swing, hits off the backside, keeps hands inside the ball with raw bat speed, and big power. Good athlete with solid fundamentals as a catcher with a quality throwing arm, but a funky release can affect accuracy at times. Should be a serviceable defensive catcher, with a chance to be an impact offensive player hitting in middle of order.
Kale Breaux, LHP, Sulphur HS
A Mississippi State signee with a 5-foot-11 170 pound frame from Sulphur HS. Breaux has a 3 pitch mix of a fastball, curveball and changeup. A clean, loose, and quick arm out of a high ¾ release with little effort. He shows good rhythm in the delivery, with a good balance point, good direction, landing in line and finishing a little upright. Breaux pitches 84-88 mph with late arm side run and commands both sides of the plate extremely well. The curveball is a good pitch at 73-75 with 1/7 shape, decent spin, but can get loopy out of the hand at times. It is thrown for strikes, but will need to develop some sharpness as he advances in the game. He also flashes a straight change that is a quality pitch at times, but he tends to elevate it allowing high school hitters to hit it hard consistently. Breaux has been very successful in his high school career because he has an advanced feel for pitching, and has a good mix of quality pitches that are thrown for strikes.
Travis Swaggerty, OF/LHP, Denham Springs
A South Alabama signee with a 5-foot-10, 175-pound frame from Denham Springs, LA. Athletic build with present strength and fast twitch actions. Quality defender that runs well with tracking instincts and plus arm strength. Left-handed hitter with smooth stroke, loads of bat speed, strength at contact, and raw power potential. Plays the game extremely hard and fast. A raw product on the mound, but has a loose, whippy arm that sits 88-91 mph and gets up to 92 mph. He has flown under the radar for the majority of his career, but is making some noise as a possible draft sleeper.
