With our first state champion crown handed to Bel Air on Friday night for the 4A championship, we now go to the triple-header that is Monday for the 3A, 2A, and 1A state championships. What better way to sum up this season than Mother Nature once again seemingly having a hand in these games and if we can make them happen for today. Let us take a look at the 2A and 1A finals.

2A

La Plata

Warriors have had an impressive run to the championship beating their opponents by a combined score of 37-5. La Plata is playing in their third state championship game this decade and have made it to the state playoffs five times this decade. Tyler Stockwell is the big hitter on offense, but Scott Logue is not far behind and has come up with big hits throughout the season. Taylor Cook and Brett Pilkerton also are key hitters to keep an eye out for. Logue is one of the top arms on the mound and keep an eye out for Jake Hanks as well.

Williamsport

Wildcats have again played good baseball leading up to the championship with their biggest and closest game coming against Marriotts Ridge in the region championship in a tight 7-6 affair.  Williamsport have equally been able to put runs on the board and look to be an evenly matched opponent. Gage Kyler paces the offense with his .465 BA and 25 RBI. Keep an eye on Jake Arnone and JP Melby as well to provide pop on offense. Matt Harsh leads the pitching staff with his 7-1 record and 1.71 ERA.

And the champion is

A very intriguing matchup for the 2A title could be a back and forth affair and could have the potential for plenty of lead changes and some offense. Which pitching staff will come through the most will play key.

1A

Brunswick

Railroaders are set out to repeat as champions in 2016 and with a win would be another step closer to the dominance the program experienced in the 90’s where they won three championships. They have been a resilient team this playoffs and have yet to show the pressure get to them. They have been through it all before and seem ready to make it back-to-back. Andrew Wanger has been a huge player for this season with his 56 IP and 3.13 ERA (81 strikeouts) to go along with his .413 BA and 33 RBI. Connor Kean has a .438 BA and is just uner 30 stolen bases for the season.  Keep an eye out for John Harding and Tyler Ebberts who have been clutch players throughout the season.

Patterson Mill

Huskies are looking for the first state championship in school history. They have been very battle tested with one of the tougher routes to get the championship. They survived a back and forth extra inning matchup with Bohemia Manor and took it to a talented McDonough squad that was the top seed in the Region. Offensively they are paced by seniors Jacob Michael and Kyle Goudy, hitting .465 and .385 respectively. On the mound they are led by sophomore Austin Koehn (64 IP, 1.09) and junior Jake Sheesley (43.2 IP, 2.88 ERA).

And the winner is

Brunswick has made it back to the championship and have the experience to win it all again. Wanger has the ability to take over a game and will be looking to do just that tomorrow. Patterson Mill is riding an impressive 18 game win streak an want to see that streak go one more game. The Huskies play the game well and execute at a high level so it should make for a great contest.
