RANKINGS RISERS
Angel Cervantes - Warren (UCLA)
-
Cervantes might have been the biggest pop-up arm from this spring. The Warren HS RHP seemingly got better/stronger as the year went on dominating in important league games and had a standout pitching performance against one of the top lineups in the state in Huntington Beach in his first ever playoff matchup. Cervantes is a power pitcher who comes at you with a low 90s FB along with legit feel for a high spin breaker. His standout spring season on the mound caught the radar of UCLA and he committed to the school with a couple weeks left in the season.
Manny Dorantes - Salinas
-
Big and strong, he's got a profile as a physical 3B with hit-ability and defensive ability that belies a young player his size (6-foot-2, 215-lbs). Feet are quite nimble and the arm is strong. Same raw arm strength shows up on the mound, running the fastball up to 87 in a game we were present at earlier this spring. As with all young players who display two-way ability, it's best to reserve judgment for which position a player profiles at long term, but as we are always asked, Dorantes, for our money, is a corner bat.
Jordan Marian - JSerra (UCSB)
-
Marian was one of our best standouts from our Underclass Games last fall and it earned him a commitment to UCSB shortly after. Since then all he had done was performed in limited ABs for JSerra and eventually earned a spot in the everyday lineup for them. HE profiles as a corner INF/OF but the bat seems like it could be a true carrying tool. He has strong/quick hands that throw the barrel at the baseball and can really impact the baseball.
Jett Kenady - Carlsbad (Cal)
-
Jett was one of the biggest surprises out of SD this spring. Coming off an injury last season the two-sport athlete exploded onto the scene to begin this season which helped him earn his commitment to Cal and he finished the season slashing .333/.363/620 with 6 HRs. It’s a projectable profile with his current wiry/athletic frame that moves well at SS combined with some present strength already that shows at the plate. With how he performed in the toughest league in SD, he should be a player that should to continue to garner attention his next 2 years of HS.
Jaiden Oldwin - Vacaville
-
Oldwin had (well, the team is still in the playoffs so he's not done) an outstanding season on the mound for the Bulldogs. He's an athletically built 5-foot-11, 150-lbs and the athleticism also plays for him as a high school outfielder. As a soph he was named pitcher of the year in his conference, so the performance is already there with the stuff. Speaking of stuff, the FB is 85-87, has touched 88, can sustain it deep into games as well, once again, speaking to his athleticism.
Tristan Dalzell - Los Alamitos (LBSU)
-
The 6-3/180 LBSU commit LHP has one of the highest ceilings in the class. It’s a clean/athletic delivery down the mound with a loose arm. His FB is one that regularly sits in the mid-80s (T87) and pairs it with a developing low 70s CB he has feel for in-zone and a quality 79-81 CH. The projection in the frame along with the easiness of the operation leaves a lot to be excited about down the line and he should continue to climb these rankings.
Brandon Thomas - Mater Dei
-
Thomas is an uncommitted prospect out of Mater Dei that has a very intriguing upside. The 6-4/210 performed well with the bat this spring where what consistently stood out was how he keeps it relatively simple in the box with his swing and lets his frame/size generate the power that still hasn’t been fully tapped into. Then he can also jump on the mound he runs it up into the mid-high 80s with an easy quick arm. His RHP/CIF profile should bring a lot of interest as he enters the summer.
Brady Errecart - St. Mary's-Stockton
-
Lithely built SS, he was a standout at a spring tournament for what has become one of the top teams in Northern California, and they are REALLY young. Smooth feet, ball jumps out of his hand with carry across the diamond. Soft hands and plays the position with the confidence of a good glove man. Offensively he displays strong bat to ball skills with an easy stroke and good timing. As he gets stronger, the extra base hits will start to come in bunches. Chance to be among the top defense/offense players up the middle in the class.
Matthew Tiendas - Wilcox
-
Power from the left side of the plate, real power, is one of the most sought after commodities in the game. Tiendas showed all spring that he not only has juice, but can regularly get to it. Phsically put together, stands in box with open set up, quick trigger and fast hands. Drives the ball to all fields while finishing with a classic left-handed follow through. That willingness and ability to use all fields should keep him on all pitches and dangerous when mistakes are made in the zone.
Sean McGrath - San Marin
-
Has shouldered a big load on the mound for one of the regions stronger top to bottom teams. At 6-foot-1, 185-lbs he's built with lean strength throughout and when not on the mound is often playing 2nd base, speaking to a well-rounded athlete. Saw earlier in the spring, peaking at around 85-86 mph with the fastball, which now has been creeping higher as the weather warms. Three pitch mix, highly competitive and what was most impressive when seeing that early spring game was he kept his team in a game vs a strong opponent and it didn't look like he had his best feel that day.
