2023 MLB Bonus Pools
March 1, 2023
The values for the 2023 MLB Draft have risen 9.9 percent compared to 2022, which reflects the growth of industry revenues. The top pick now comes with a slot value of $9,721,000.
Each selection in the first 10 rounds comes with an assigned value. The total for a club's picks is what it can spend in those rounds without being penalized. Teams are able to use that money however they like with penalties if they go over their total bonus pool. If a player taken in the top 10 rounds does not sign, that pick value is subtracted from the selecting team's pool.
Many teams will go over their total bonus pools and pay a tax, although no club has ever gone over the 5% max threshold that triggers loss of pick penalties.
The largest pool belongs to the Pittsburgh Pirates, who also hold the No. 1 overall pick. The smallest pool belongs to the Phillies at $5,185,000. Philadelphia lost its 2nd and 5th rounders this year by signing free agent Trea Turner.
