2022 Spring Team Preview: Portsmouth
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - Tim Hopley has seen a lot of success in his 27 years at Portsmouth. The veteran coach expects more of it in 2022 as he enters his 28th year in charge of the Clippers.
“Like everyone else, we'll go as far as our pitching will take us,” explained Copley, who has led Portsmouth to seven state championships since 2008. “Limit walks, make the routine plays defensively, and swing the bats like we're capable and we can be a good baseball team.”
Five college commits - Justin Blumenthal, Will Hindle, Matthew Minckler, Colin Marshall and Carmine Zingariello - are being counted on to make an eighth state title a possibility. Blumenthal is a third baseman headed to UMass-Amherst, Hindle a shortstop going to Rhode Island, Minckler an outfielder committed to Virginia Tech, Marshall an outfielder/2B recruited by Husson University and Zingariello an OF/pitcher signed with Nichols College. Minckler is the lone junior with the rest seniors.
Additionally, junior closer Eliott Miles is another top returnee for Portsmouth, which has two key losses from a year ago in shortstop Myles Sargent, now at Maine, and right-handed pitcher Ryan Minckler, now at Virginia.
“We have a lot of versatility and athleticism in our lineup,” pointed out Hopley, whose Portsmouth team a year ago finished 16-3, losing in the Division 1 quarterfinals.
Junior pitcher Boden Driscoll and sophomore infielder Jake Carlisle are newcomers that Hopley believes can make a big impact for the Clippers in 2022.
“We look forward to getting back to a full season and full schedule for the first time since 2019,” Hopley concluded. “We haven't seen a lot of our opponents since then due to Covid restrictions.”
