2022 Spring Team Preview: Lincoln-Sudbury

SUDBURY, Ma. - A strong senior class has Lincoln-Sudbury head coach Matt Westworth exuberant about the upcoming campaign.

“Our senior class has a really good mental and emotional makeup,” the seventh-year head coach of the Warriors related. “It’s really special the way they jell and support each other.”

The hope is that it translates into success on the field for a program that has won three state championships since 2000 and is coming off a 17-5 season that included league and league tournament titles. Lincoln-Sudbury also won three postseason games before losing 4-2 to St. John’s Prep in the state quarterfinals.

“We have so many players returning to our lineup, not only with varsity experience but that were involved in a lot of success last year,” Westworth said.

Thomas Rogers, the 71st-rated senior right-handed pitcher in the nation, has started since his freshman year and returns after hitting .444 a year ago, playing first base but not pitching in 2021. Plans are for the Maryland commit to get back on the mound in 2022.

Righty Jaden McGinty is another returnee after going 5-1 with a 2.31 ERA as a junior with an additional pitcher back in Aidan Sweeney, who was 2-0 with a hold, save and 1.71 ERA during his sophomore campaign.

“We have a staff that will be relying upon control,” noted Westworth, who will be without RHP Robbie O’Connor, a Wake Forest commit who is now a post-grad at Winchendon School.

There is plenty more experience back this season including seniors Thomas Dillon, Bobby Haarde, David Jurewicz and Henry Hurtt-Rensko. Dillon hit .317 with 18 runs and nine stolen bases a year ago and the Franklin-Pierce commit, who is the ninth-rated 2022 third baseman in New England, may move to shortstop this season.

Haard, a center fielder headed to Denison, hit .356 a year ago, while outfielders Jurewicz, a recruit of Saint Joseph’s College of Maine, and Hurtt-Rensko, both hit better than .300.

Evan Munuz, a Hobart College commit, is back for his senior year to play catcher after averaging .289 in 2021.

“We need to find someone to play up the middle, that will be huge,” Westworth said about the biggest holes to fill after losing Jesse McCullough (a Tufts commit now at Phillips Andover) and Connor Peek (Holy Cross).

Sophomore Jake Haarde, the third-rated 2024 second baseman in New England and the younger brother of Bobby, is expected to help fill the void for Westworth, who has one other major worry about his team this season.

“Pitching depth,” Westwood said. “We have three good ones but we need to find someone to compliment them.”

The Dual County League is another area of concern for the Lincoln-Sudbury mentor.

“It’s been improving a lot,” Westwood pointed out. “You saw that in the state tournament. Last year only one team in the league lost in the first round and that’s because we played them.”
