LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The 2022 spring high school season in California generated some incredible individual moments and performances throughout all corners of the state. As the spring high school season comes to a close, Prep Baseball Report is excited to announce the players who emerged ahead of the competition at all levels in the state of California. These players have been selected not only for their outstanding statistical numbers, but also for their overall effect on their high school program.
State Player of the Year: Malcolm Moore - C.K. McClatchy HS
All-State Team
C - Anthony Martinez - De La Salle HS - Class of 2022 - UC Irvine
A multiple year starter for De La Salle, Martinez saved his best for last putting together a historic season in 2022. Martinez set school records in both home runs (10) and RBI (44) to go along with a .411 batting average a .516 OBP. More impressively, Martinez walked 23 times and struck out only two times all season. Defensively Martinez was equally impressive with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with 25 assists on the season. Martinez is signed with UC Irvine.
1B- Matteo Bellisimo - Tamalpais HS - Class of 2022 - St. Mary’s
Bellisimo had the type of season most high school seniors want to finish their careers with as he led the Red Tailed Hawks of Tamalpais in just about every offensive category. Bellisimo hit .462 with 10 doubles, 3 home runs, 24 RBI and a whopping 1.305 OPS. His OBP of .600 also led the team while he only struck out 11 times in 105 plate appearances. He’s shown positional versatility by playing first base and catcher in the past and it wouldn’t be out of the question to see him in the outfield. Bellisimo is attending St. Mary’s College.
IF - Cutter Coffey - Liberty HS - Class of 2022 - Texas
One of the premier two-way talents in the state, Coffey had a big year at the plate leading Liberty into the postseason. Coffey hit .442 with 13 doubles, 12 home runs (two grand slams), three triples, 48 runs scored, 32 RBI, 13 stolen bases with a 1.602 OPS. A consistent threat in the middle of the order, drew 28 walks in 129 plate appearances. Coffey also registered six wins on the mound. Coffey is widely considered a high round draft pick this summer and is signed with the University of Texas.
IF - Cameron Kim - Norco HS - Class of 2023 - UCLA
As far as shortstops go few, if any, had as big of an offensive season as Kim did for Norco. Batting third in a stacked lineup, Kim slashed .510/.696/1.240 to go with four home runs, 31 RBI, 31 runs scored, and seven doubles. Defensively Kim showed enough to have scouts believing he has the ability to stay at shortstop in the future and will be highly regarded in the 2023 MLB Draft. Kim is committed to UCLA.
IF - Roman Martin - Servite HS - Class of 2022 - UCLA
Playing in what many believe is the best league in America, all Martin did was put together a league Co-MVP type season while erasing all doubts about his ability to remain at shortstop in the future. For the season Martin hit .422 - .511 in league play - with a .547 OBP and a 1.162 OPS. In a class that is highly regarded for its shortstops, Martin is near the top of the list. Martin is committed to UCLA.
IF - Austin Charles - Stockdale HS - Class of 2022 - UC Santa Barbara
Charles is one of the fastest rising prospects on MLB Draft boards thanks in part to his incredible athleticism and his performance against quality competition in 2022. Charles slashed a ridiculous .483/.527/1.458 with 56 hits, 57 RBI, 13 doubles, and 13 home runs. He was also very good on the mound going 5-0 with a 1.35 ERA with two saves, 62 strikeouts in 46.1 innings pitched. Charles has all but eliminated any doubt that he could stay at shortstop in the future. Charles is signed with UCSB.
OF - Andrew Lamb - JSerra HS - Class of 2023 - USC
Lamb put together a big season for JSerra en route to MVP honors in the Trinity League. Lamb slashed .390/.690/1.080 for the CIF-SS D1 champion Lions. He finished with 39 hits, four home runs, 19 RBI, 10 doubles, and 13 walks in 100 plate appearances playing right field despite being a catcher by trade. Lamb is committed to USC.
OF - Jake Jackson - Madison HS - Class of 2023 - SDSU
Jackson, an all league performer in three sports, put together a big season for Madison elevating his MLB Draft status as heads into his senior season. Jackson finished the season slashing .439/.766/1.250 with 47 hits, 29 runs, 34 RBI, 14 doubles, 3 triples, and five home runs in 107 at-bats on the season. Defensively Jackson finished with a .983 fielding percentage in 50 total chances. Jackson is currently committed to SDSU.
OF - Raoul Fabian - California HS - Class of 2022 - LBSU
Fabian had a monster season for the 23-6 Grizzlies. He slashed .433/.666/1.199 with 39 hits, 36 runs, 11 doubles, two triples and two home runs both of which came in the CIF-NCS semifinal game. He also had a .532 on base percentage. Fabian also had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage on the season. Fabian is signed with Long Beach State.
OF - Henry Bolte - Palo Alto HS - Class of 2022 - Texas
Bolte burst onto the scene last summer where he made a name for himself as a power hitting outfielder with huge upside. He carried that into this spring where he slashed 0.441/.922/1.498 with 45 hits, 13 home runs, six doubles, two triples, 42 RBI, and 57 runs scored while drawing 20 walks on the season. Bolte also finished with a .973 fielding percentage with only two errors in 73 total chances. Bolte is widely considered a high round draft pick in this year’s MLB Draft and is currently signed with the University of Texas.
P - Ethan Lay - Colusa HS - Class of 2022
When it comes to dominant pitching performances you’ll be hard pressed to find a better season that the one Lay put together in 2022. He finished 14-0, 0.16 ERA, 5 CG, 4 Shutouts, 1 no-hitter, 1 SV, 85.1 IP, 155 K, 35 H, 13 BB helping lead the Redhawks to a 33-1 record and an appearance in the CIF-Northern section championship game.
P - Dylan Goff - Etiwanda HS - Class of 2023
Goff burst on the scene in a big way in 2022 helping lead Etiwanda to the CIF-SS D2 championship and deep run in the regional championship. Goff finished with a perfect 12-0 record with a 0.73 ERA, 93 strikeouts, and six complete games in 86 innings pitched allowing nine earned runs all season. Opponents batted 1.67 against him.
P - Louis Rodriguez - Orange Lutheran HS - Class of 2022 - TCU
Rodriguez showed flashes of brilliance from his first outing through to his last. Rodriguez finished with an 8-1 record with 1.17 ERA, 70 strikeouts against six walks in 53.2 innings pitched while allowing only 11 earned runs on the season. Opponents hit 2.07 against him. Orange Lutheran played one of the toughest schedules nationally which only enhances Rodriguez’s performance on the season. Rodriguez is signed with TCU.
P - Kyle Jimenez - Clovis West HS - Class of 2022
Pitching in what is arguably the best league in the Central Section, Jimenez put together a great season for Clovis West. Finishing with a 10-1 record, Jimenez had a 1.38 ERA with 46 strikeouts against seven walks in 66 innings pitched en route to earning TRAC Co-Pitcher of the Year honors. Opponents hit .225 against him on the season. Jimenez helped Clovis West to a second place finish in the always tough Tri-River Athletic Conference.
P - Blake Rogers - St. Francis HS - Class of 2022 - Baylor
Pitching in the always tough West Catholic Athletic League, Rogers saved his best for his final season. He finished with a 7-0 record with a 0.80 ERA with 95 strikeouts in 70.1 innings pitched. The senior allowed only 39 hits and 27 walks against 284 batters faced while holding opponents to a 0.158 batting average. Rogers was the ace of the staff for the WCAL champions. Rogers is signed with Baylor.
Util - Brady Ebel - Etiwanda HS - Class of 2025
It’s rare to see a freshman have the type of impact Ebel had on his Etiwanda team. Ebel batted .330 for the Eagles and he had five homers with 36 RBI. As a pitcher, he came on for 44 innings and had a 6-0 record with a 0.32 ERA. Brady also struck out 35 batters. Ebel helped lead the Eagles to the CIF-SS D2 title and a run in the state regional championships. Ebel is currently uncommitted.
Util - Gavin Grahovac - Villa Park HS - Class of 2023 - Texas A&M
Perhaps no player in the CIF-SS had a bigger season than Grahovac when you consider the competition Villa Park faced all season long. Grahovac batted .376 with five home runs and 24 RBI in 34 games. He also had 17 doubles with three triples with 19 walks and only struck out 15 times in 146 at-bats. He was such a feared hitter that teams implemented the shift against him and even intentionally walked him in key situations during games. Grahovac is currently the No. 1 player in California’s Class of 2023 rankings and is widely considered a first round pick in next year's MLB Draft. Grahovac is committed to Texas A&M.
UTIL - Eric Bitonti - Aquinas HS - Class of 2023 - Oregon
Bitonti put Aquinas baseball on the map in 2022 with a huge season that only solidified his reputation as a top MLB Draft prospect in the 2023 class. The junior hit .526 with 50 hits, 41 RBI, 17 doubles, and eight home runs. His 55 runs scored was tied for third in the state in the 2022 season. Bitonti was also shone on the mound with a 6-2 record with a 0.62 ERA in 45 ⅓ innings pitched with 47 strikeouts.
