3A Preview
As the 2019 high school quickly approaches and teams are starting to begin full practice, we will now move onto Class 3A for a brief preview of the top teams and their respective key returners.
Gordo
After winning the Class 3A State Championship in 2017, Gordo was defeated by Mobile Christian in the semifinals last year. They are known as a powerhouse in the state of Alabama, as they are consistently making deep runs in the playoffs almost every year. The Green Wave have won a total of four state championships since 2002. They will miss 4-time All-State player Collin Herring this year, but definitely have the firepower to make another run deep into the playoffs in 2019.
Lauderdale County
The Tigers made a historic run in 2018, making it all the way to the Class 3A State Championship in Montgomery but was defeated by Mobile Christian in 2 games. They were led by a duo of underclassmen last year in ’20 OF Blade Wisdom and ’20 C Slade Brown, who will both return for the Tigers in 2019. Both Wisdom and Brown were selected to 2nd Team All-State. On the mound, they lose RHP Parker Garner who is now pitching for Calhoun Community College in Decatur, AL. However, Head Coach Corey Looney is optimistic about the arms the Tigers have coming back in 2019.
Opp
The Bobcats defeated T.R. Miller in Round 1 last year, but were defeated in Round 2 by eventual state champions Mobile Christian. This would be the only series for Mobile Christian that went to 3 games. The Bobcats were ranked inside the Top 5 in many polls for the most of last year. On the mound for 2019, Opp returns 2nd Team All-State LHP Logan Ross. Ross was 7-1 with 71 K’s in 49 1/3 innings in 2018. They will definitely be counting on Ross for a similar season this year. The Bobcats have never won a state championship in their school history, but look to change that in 2019.
