2018 North Georgia Summer Trials: Class of 2020 Two-way Players
June 29, 2018
In the penultimate look at prospects from the 2018 North Georgia Summer Trials, we take a gander at rising junior two-way players. Two members of this cohort -- Dalton IF/RHP Rhett Hammontree and Loganville Christian OF/RHP Dalton Strickland -- were covered in last week's Top Prospects rundown, while three other solid performers are profiled below.
Carter Stumpf 3B / RHP / Allatoona, GA / 20205-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitter has a straight away set-up at the plate with relaxed, high hands and a level swing through the zone. He showed good bat-to-ball skills, hitting line drive after line drive. Stumpf is already showing good batspeed with an 88 mph exit velocity, and will benefit from even more strength gains. Defensively, he has playable actions with a soft glovehand and field the ball out front. On the mound, he showed a repeatable delivery with compact actions. Would like to see him get better extension to the plate and get over his front side more in the future, but showed the ability to execute three pitches for strikes. Fastball (77-78) flashed quality downhill angle. Curveball (64-65) shows good shape top-to-bottom with feel to land at the bottom of the zone. Change-up (68-70) has the makings of a quality third pitch. All three pitches come from the same high-3/4 arm slot. |
Hunter Payne OF / RHP / Cartersville, GA / 2020Payne checks in at 5-foot-10, 160-pounds and shows solid baseball actions in the field, at the plate and on the mound. From alanced right-handed stroke with a high finish, he consistently barreled baseballs to the pull side. His hard contact resulted in an 86 mph exit velocity. Defensively, Payne showed fluid natural actions. On the mound, he stays over the rubber and allows his arm to work free and easy. While he has not gotten into big velocity he has the pitchability to execute all three pitches. Payne does a lot of things well, but will benefit greatly from strength gains. |
Treston Turner RHP / OF / Woodstock, GA / 2020Turner has an enviable build at 6-foot-3, 190-pounds. He works against a nice high front side and shows the ability to get downhill with his fastball at 78-82. He spins a 12-6 curveball that is still on the softer side, but shows good shape and feel for the pitch. His slider is up out of the hand and runs into his curveball. He would benefit from concentrating on one breaking ball instead of two. His change (70-71) has deception and just needs a little more commitment. Turner has projection to what he does and needs to get stronger to make it come true. At the plate, Turner sets-up with a straight away stance and a pull approach from the right side. He can be long to the baseball because his hands get buried deep into his body on his load, but the overall DNA of his swing and leverage to it are solid. Has the frame too and will benefit at the plate from added strength. |
