2017 Super60: Maryland Quick Hits

Sunday, February 5th marked the 15th annual Super 60 showcase hosted by Prep Baseball Report. The event has become the most heavily scouted preseason event for potential draft picks across the country. The primary purpose of the Super 60 is to give professional area scouts along with National cross-checkers a head start to the high school season.

Last year Matt Mervis was the first player from Maryland to be part of the Super60. This year Maryland was represented by three young men from the Old Line state: Harold Cortijo, Randy Bednar, and Brandon Dorsey.

+ Cortijo (Riverdale Baptist) has been one of the fastest rising players in the region since moving to Maryland over a year ago. The young righty did not disappoint during the Super60. Cortijo sat 87-89 with an easy effort delivery and arm action. His final two pitches, Cortijo them ramped it up a bit, hitting 93, then 92 on his final two pitches. Cortijo was one of six pitchers that were 93 or better on the day. His secondary showed the potential to be good pitches down the road as he continues to develop. If anything his workout created more buzz for the spring.

+ Bednar (Landon) was one of the most complete outfielders at the event. The outfielder and Maryland commit ran a 6.79, which was the 9th best 60 on the day, showed off an easy 89 mph from the outfield with athletic feet and accurate throws to the plate. Finally Bednar showed off the strength at the plate with a 95 mph bat speed. Bednar has quieted down his approach at the plate simplifying his swing and quieting down his load. Having made those adjustments, he still showed quick hands and bat speed at the plate.

+ Dorsey (Riverdale Baptist) showed off his ability at the plate, getting barrel on the ball well and making some loud contact during the day. The Florida International recruit got up to 94 mph on his exit velocity.
