2017 OHSAA Baseball Tournament - State Final Four Preview

Ohio Spring baseball always seems to fly by and in 2017 that is most definitely evident with the fact we are in Columbus at beautiful Huntington Park for the State Final Four. That means the four best teams in each division will battle it out to see who is the champion.

Below we have the 16-Team State Final Four Preview for all the teams across the Buckeye State.

PBR: Talk about your team advancing to state (from the regular season to the tournament run).
Greg: Our team has carried our game to game approach from the regular season into the tournament. We haven’t had any easy games, but we keep finding different ways to win close games. Every team we played in the tournament had at least 17 wins this season. We defeated 2 teams from the GCL, 2 from the GWOC, and 1 from the ECC.

PBR: What has stood out to you along the way about this team (maybe a turning point in the season or something you saw in the offseason)?
Greg: The biggest contributor to our success is the chemistry and selfless attitude the players have. Our senior leadership has been great, and the younger players have followed.

PBR: What does this mean to your school, community and city?
Greg: The school/community is very supportive of our baseball program. They are proud to see these players continue the successful tradition that was built by former coach Bill Dreisbach.

No. 34 Olentangy Orange

PBR: Talk about your team advancing to state (from the regular season to the tournament run).
Phil: We basically had everyone back from a (24-4) team in 2016 and just did not play great baseball early and lost 5 games by one run. We have great kids who kept working and have played very well for about three weeks now.

PBR: What has stood out to you along the way about this team (maybe a turning point in the season or something you saw in the offseason)?
Phil: Good talent, GREAT kids and good work by my Assistant Head Coach Matt Lattig and Pitching Coach Mike Weaver.

PBR: What does this mean to your school, community and city?
Phil: The District and Regional crowds were incredible and it has been a fun ride.

No. 30 Strongsville

PBR: Talk about your team advancing to state (from the regular season to the tournament run).
Douglas: This team is special. They’re such great kids and they play so hard for each other. They believe in one another. Most importantly on the field, they embrace adversity when it comes their way and respond to it as well as any team I’ve been around. We started the year 0-4 and though those games were against Moeller, Mason, Hoban, and Solon, you still don’t feel great as a team at 0-4. However, the kids’ confidence never wavered and we kept working in practice. We got our first win against Shaker Hts. a couple days later and then scored 17 runs on 24 hits in a game Medina started their ace in the game after that. At that point we no longer thought we’d be good; we knew we’d be good. In retrospect, that Medina game was even more impressive than we realized at the time because of how  good they became by the end of the season. It’s fitting our regional final was against them because our first win over them in mid April gave us confidence and I’d imagine their win over us in early May gave them confidence. The last three teams we played in the tournament (St. Ignatius, Perrysburg, and Medina) have really tested our toughness as we saw many quality arms, came from behind to win twice, and held on to win once. Throughout the tournament we’ve thrown strikes and made plays defensively. If we keep doing that, we’ll have a chance.

PBR: What has stood out to you along the way about this team (maybe a turning point in the season or something you saw in the offseason)?
Douglas: I already mentioned the consecutive Shaker Hts./Medina games. I think the other turning point was in a loss. We lost to Massillon Jackson 4-3 at our place on a cold Saturday in late April but it was a very well-pitched, well-played game that we were in until the very end. If the Medina game convinced us we’d be good, the Jackson game showed us we had a chance to be great. Jackson has been, without question in my mind, the best team in the state over the last two years and when we were with them pitch-for-pitch coming off a 10-game winning streak, we knew we could play with anyone.

PBR: What does this mean to your school, community and city?
Douglas: The support we’ve received throughout our run has been great. The district final and regional final were extremely well-attended. We even had a lot of fans make the drive up to Bowling Green for the regional semifinal. I’d also like to recognize that Strongsville has had strong youth travel programs for several decades, whether that’s through Strongsville-based teams or teams that draw from multiple communities. When you get kids coming into high school with some baseball knowledge, a base of fundamentals, and passion for the game, it helps our coaching staff develop that talent. The players are the reason we’re going to Columbus but everyone connected with our kids has played some role in getting them to this moment.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Douglas: I think our schedule has prepared us for the tough tournament games we’ve played in.  Out of conference, we try to schedule up as much as possible; what most don’t realize is how good our conference schedule is also. We had 3 teams from the Greater Cleveland Conference in the final 8 in the state in Division I (Medina and Mentor were the others) and Solon won our league with a 10-0 record and a conference tournament championship. Solon and Brunswick went to the district finals. 5 teams in an 8 team league making the district finals is extremely impressive.

Division II

PBR: Talk about your team advancing to state (from the regular season to the tournament run).
Cam: It has been execution for us. Pitchers locating well, our defense making routine plays, and situational hitting has helped us all season. The team has embraced hard work and a blue collar mentality. Most importantly, they believe in, and support one another. They just find a way to win games by grinding and competing relentlessly. Also, playing in the Northern Lakes League is terrific preparation for tournament play. It is a phenomenal baseball conference from top to bottom, so we are challenged three days a week all season long.

PBR: What has stood out to you along the way about this team (maybe a turning point in the season or something you saw in the offseason)?
Cam: We made the decision to travel to Florida during spring break for the first time as a program, and I believe that experience has helped this team come together and learn to play for one another. Our senior leadership has been phenomenal, and this group has been playing baseball together for a long time. They have grown and learned so much from last season, and their effort and willingness to focus on attention to detail has made us a fundamentally sound team.

PBR: What does this mean to your school, community and city?
Cam: Just looking at the overwhelming amount of support we’ve received over the last few weeks really shows how much athletics can do to bring a community together. Our district administration, faculty members, student population, the families in our program, and former players and alumni have shown us so much love. It’s an incredible feeling to know that everyone is pulling for us.

PBR: Talk about your team advancing to state (from the regular season to the tournament run).
Mike: We're very excited about making it here. Our preseason goals were to advance past regionals. In 2014 we made it to regional finals and lost, and a few of our players that were on that team were determined to make it beyond that level.

PBR: What has stood out to you along the way about this team (maybe a turning point in the season or something you saw in the offseason)?
Mike: Getting Garrett Wissman back healthy in our rotation was a huge boost for our whole pitching staff. We lost him for the tournament season last year, and it hurt our depth. Ryan Peltier has gone from our projected closer to an outstanding starter.

PBR: What does this mean to your school, community and city?
Mike: As a CJ alum myself it means a lot. I've heard from several guys that I played with who are really excited to see the team playing at the level we're at now.

PBR: Talk about your team advancing to state (from the regular season to the tournament run).
Mike: Started the year 5-5. Now 23-7. Started to play really well at the right time. Our schedule in the Midwest Athletic Conference – with non-league games from the SCL + WBL – prepare us for this. Great respect for the teams and coaches in our area.

PBR: What has stood out to you along the way about this team (maybe a turning point in the season or something you saw in the offseason)?
Mike: Our pitching and defense has really been super. “Great feet start great gloves” – these kids battle. They enjoy what they are doing. That’s a big deal for kids.

PBR: What does this mean to your school, community and city?
Mike: Not sure this Final 4 run was expected by Minster – esp. early in the season – but I believe Minster has 29 state titles in its history. The girls track team is going for another title just across town this weekend at Jessie Owens Track. Lot of Minster Orange + Black will be in Columbus this weekend.

Dalton

Coaches Thoughts:

PBR: Talk about your team advancing to state (from the regular season to the tournament run).
Scott: We are very young and it took us awhile to plug in some holes and gain the experience and confidence needed to play at a high level. Once we settled on a lineup and gained that experience, we have become pretty consistent by playing better defensively and having a better approach at the plate.

PBR: What has stood out to you along the way about this team (maybe a turning point in the season or something you saw in the offseason)?
Scott: I think our turning point this season was around the 2/3 mark of the season or so when we beat a very good Hillsdale team in our league, who was in 1st place at the time, with a freshman pitcher. We were winning 9-1 going into the bottom of the 7th and held on to win 9-6. I think that gave us a big boost of confidence and energy as we prepared for the tournament.

PBR: What does this mean to your school, community and city?
Scott: Our community is awesome. It is very small and close-knit, with lots of farmland. High school sporting events are a focus of the community all year around. We have had a great year this year with the football team making the playoffs, volleyball making it to state, girls basketball making it to the regionals, and the boys basketball team making it to district finals. This ending sort of caps off a great and exciting school year.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Scott: It’s an exciting time for us in Dalton. Everyone thought we would be pretty good next year with the group of guys we will have returning. Once we gained some experience and confidence this year, we sort of gelled and got going at the right time of the year.  Everyone says “it is best to be playing your best baseball at the end of the year heading into tournaments,” and that describes us this year.
