2017 OUTLOOK
"As with most years, more than half of the pitching innings (60%) and plate appearances (64%) from the previous season have graduated. Four players that played significantly in 2016 return in 2017: Erik Holloman, Ross Indlecoffer, Matthew Laursen, and Ryan Nickel. Many other players are excited about their opportunity to contribute in 2017. Seniors Matthew Laursen, Justin Langer, Trevor Stephan and Adam Davidson are expected to anchor the pitching staff. There are several players that will also compete for time on the mound in 2017; we expect and need them to step up and contribute. The success of the Mustangs in 2017 will largely be determined by how well we are able to develop a pitching staff throughout the season going into the Section playoffs. Pitching and playing outstanding defense will always be a priority. There is obviously a strong correlation between defense and winning. Stats aren’t everything, but they do provide some perspective. Our goal each season is to field .950 or higher; a lofty goal for a high school baseball team. The state championship teams in 2013 and 2014 fielded .954 and .971 respectively. We fielded a respectable .942 in 2016. We should be very solid in the field in 2017, and will strive to achieve that .950. As with all seasons, we’re looking forward to a great deal of opportunity and competition for varsity playing time! We expect to see a number of different players earn some varsity playing time early in the season as they compete for playing time in the second half of the season and on into the Section playoffs." Head Coach Mark Downey
