2016 PBR Second Team All-State

The line between a first team All-State nominee and a second teamer was an extremely thin one, as evidence by the type of talent and statistics you’ll see from our 2016 PBR Second Team All-State members.

Let’s take a look at the 2016 PBR Second Team All-State roster:

Pitcher

Brent Headrick, Reed-Custer, 2016
Illinois State recruit. The talented 6-foot-6 left-hander went 11-1 with two saves and a 2.61 ERA on the year. In 79.2 innings pitched he struck out 118 while yielding only 50 hits. Headrick earned the win on the mound in Reed-Custer’s extra-inning 2A state title victory.

Brady Corrigan, Plainfield North, 2017
Arizona State recruit. Entering the state tournament Corrigan had surrendered only five earned runs in 72.2 innings of work. He finished the season 10-2 with a 1.36 ERA. In 79 innings of work he struck out 85 and allowed 48 hits.

Hank Christie, Oak Park-River Forest, 2016
Northwestern recruit. Voted the pitcher of the year in the West Suburban Silver Conference. Went 9-1 on the year with one save and a 1.57 ERA. Struck out 72 and only walked seven. Was 6-0 in conference play and walked only one batter in those starts. Heading into the playoffs Christie only walked 3 batters on the season.

Catcher

Sam Ferri, Niles Notre Dame
Arizona State commit. Ferri had a .409 batting average and a .532 on base percentage with eight doubles, two homeruns and 24 runs scored. He walked 20 times and struck out only four times.

First Base

Connor Nelson, Oak Park-River Forest, 2016
Illinois Wesleyan commit. Voted Player of the Year in the West Suburban Silver Conference. Had .396 batting average to go along with 12 Homeruns, 42 RBI and 41 runs scored. He hit a home run in both sectional playoff games. Also, had a .986 fielding percentage.

Middle Infield

Ryan King, Brother Rice, 2017
Michigan State recruit. Played shortstop and hit leadoff for No. 2 Brother Rice. On the season King hit .394, with 10 doubles, a home run and 32 runs scored. He also stole 17 bases in 21 attempts.

Ben Troike, Lincoln-Way North, 2016
Illinois recruit. Troike played an elite level shortstop for No. 9 Lincoln-Way North and was a tough out all year long for the Pheonix. He hit .359 on the year with a .504 on base percentage thanks to 19 walks and only six strikeouts. Troike added five doubles, four triples, two home runs, 33 runs scored and 15 RBI.

Third Base

Joey Polak, Quincy Notre Dame, 2017
South Carolina commit. Despite getting pitched around for much of the spring, evidenced by his 27 walks on the spring, Polak still put up big numbers for Quincy Notre Dame. Polak hit .497 with 13 doubles, four triples, eight home runs and 28 RBI. He also stole 14 bases this spring.

Outfield

Jack Suwinski, Taft, 2016
Indiana recruit and selected in the 15 round in this June’s MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres. Suwinski had a .493 batting average and a .641 on base percentage. He also added four doubles, four triples, nine home runs, 39 RBI and 41 runs scored this spring.

Max Downs, Stagg, 2016
Parkland JC recruit. Voted Southwest Suburban Conference Blue Player of the Year. On the year he batted .429 with 14 doubles, one triple and 10 home runs. He also knocked in 48 runners and scored 38 runs in a total of 37 games. Downs had 14 multi-hit games.

Dylan Gilbert, St. Ignatius, 2016
Heartland JC commit. Batted .490 on the season with 18 doubles, five triples and six home runs. Also, added 27 RBI and 34 runs scored. Was 10-10 in stolen bases and walked as many times as he struck out on the year.

Utility

Garrett Acton, Lemont, 2016
St. Louis recruit, put up impressive numbers on the mound and at the plate this spring. At the plate the left-handed hitter hit .435 with 17 doubles, four home runs, 23 runs and 41 RBI. On the mound he finished 7-2 with a 0.91 ERA. Acton helped lead Lemont to their second 3A state title in the last three years, twirling six innings of shutout ball.
