Last Friday, we released the PBR Draft 100—a ranking of the country’s top high school players in the 2016 class. The list went through a few versions before being posted and several good players were left on the outside looking in. Below are 10 prospects—five from states in the PBR coverage area and five from outside—that deserve recognition and could find themselves inside the top 100 when it gets updated in the spring. They’re not necessarily Nos. 101-110, but they should be watched closely as we move closer to the draft.
Garrett Gooden, RHP, St. Pius X HS, GA
A Georgia Tech recruit, Gooden has an athletic frame at 6-foot-5, 200 pounds. He’s projectable and pitches with an easy, athletic delivery. At the Under Armour Game, he struck out one and allowed a hit in one inning while sitting 88-90 mph. Also a football player, he traveled to Jupiter, FL, for the World Wood Bat Championship after being on the gridiron on a Friday night. He pitched up in thez one and clearly wasn’t at his best, but what was understandable. He still showed interesting upside. His fastball was 88-91 with life and he mixed in a curveball in the low to mid 70s with 10/4 shape. With the level of talent in Atlanta, it will be easy for scouts to check on him in the spring.
