2016 OHSAA Tournament: Road To Huntington Park - Division III State Semifinal Recap
****Rankings are based on PBR Ohio's Final Team Power Rankings
Game 1:
COLUMBUS - Eric Mullet (pictured right) extended his OHSAA all-time record streak of not allowing an earned run to 109 innings in pitching Berlin Hiland past Versailles 3-0 in a Division III state semifinal game on Friday at Huntington Park.
The senior right-hander allowed just three hits in his shutout performance against the No. 7 Tigers, two coming in the first inning. Mullet, a Malone commit, struck out eight and walked one for the No. 1 Hawks, which will play at 4 p.m. on Saturday in the D-III title game against the winner of Clear Fork and No. 14 Waynedale.
Berlin Hiland, now 29-2, scored a pair of runs in the third on a two-out HBP, Tyson Gingerich double and Bryan Yoder single and added an insurance run in the fifth on Chris Kline single, GIngerich long double to center and a Yoder sac fly.
Losing pitcher Brett McEldowney, who threw a four-hitter, had two singles for Versailles (23-5).
Game 2:
COLUMBUS - A four-run seventh inning rallied state tournament newcomer Apple Creek Waynedale past Bellville Clear Fork 6-3 and with it a berth in the Division III championship game.
Markus Schlabach had a two-run single in the uprising after Ryan Weaver led off with a single and Shayne Weaver was intentionally walked. An error and a sacrifice fly by Jarrett Wonsick helped bring in two more runs.
Schlabach (pictured right) went the distance to pick up the victory for No. 14 Waynedale (26-5), surrendering three hits and three base on balls while striking out eight.
Aaron Spidell led a 13-hit Waynedale attack with three singles while Weaver, Schlabach and Evan Reidenbach each had a pair of singles.
Thomas Staab, Hunter Boyer and Luke Clark had the lone hits for Clear Fork (19-14), which score two runs in the bottom of the sixth to go in front 3-2 on three walks, a Boyer RBI single and a sac fly from Clark.
Clear Fork freshman starting pitcher Mitchell Dulin did not allow a run in 4.2 innings, giving up six hits and one walk with one strikeout before being relieved.
Waynedale faces top-ranked Berlin Hiland in Saturday's 4 p.m.title game.
