In 2011, Olentangy Liberty High School produced two of the top prospects in the Midwest regon: Josh Desze (Ohio State Buckeye and New York Yankee draft pick) and Michael O’Neill (Michigan Wolverine and New York Yankee draft pick).
With those players over two years removed from Liberty, a new wave of talent is emerging for this Division I program located just outside of Columbus.
And, freshman Cam Comer is finding himself near the top of that list.
The versatile prospect hit the circuit this winter attending the 12/18 Silver Spikes Clinic in Columbus as well as the 1/28 Pre-Season Underclass Showcase in Dayton.
After working out in the infield, behind the plate, and on the mound, Comer demonstrated the ability to play several different positions at a high level of play.
While those skills were impressive, his left-handed bat is the tool that has caught the eye of both college and MLB scouts.
His scouting report from the January 28th event notes:
Best skill is his bat. Definite HR power potential. Shows loft. Squared upright stance with quick bat speed into zone. Squares barrel on ball with controlled upper-cut. Good load & finish.
Reflecting on his recent performance, the quiet Comer says, “I thought that I did pretty well in the all the events: infield, catching, hitting and pitching.”
He goes on to say, “I thought I threw the ball well from behind the plate to second. Also, I hit the ball well in the cages and hit 80 mph from the mound.”
With his attention turned towards the upcoming season, Comer will begin his high school career as new head coach Ty Brenning takes over for former coach Matt Lattig, who stepped down to spend more time with his family.
While discussing his expectations for the upcoming season, the humble Comer says, “I want to play at the highest level possible, be successful, and be a good teammate.”
This summer, Comer will continue playing summer baseball with the Ohio Elite program out of Columbus, the same program that helped produce Josh Desze and Michael O’Neill.
In addition, Comer has received an invitation and will be participating in the inaugural Underclass Games at The Ohio State University on July 31st and August 1st.
Comer currently holds a 3.5 GPA and enjoys studying history and math.
