2013 Prospect Watch: Dylan Jones, Avon HS
November 16, 2011
Dylan Jones is a 6-foot, 210 pound junior catcher from Avon High School. Behind the plate he shows good mechanics and the ability to block well. Jones projects to hit for power, with his slightly open stance and plus bat speed. He gets to extension well and has proven to have gap to gap power.
Avon head coach Troy Drosche feels very fortunate to have Jones as his starting catcher.
“Dylan is a great teammate and very coachable. He is also an excellent wrestler that takes care of his classroom responsibilities as well (3.625 GPA). He is one of our hardest workers that loves being around the game. He plays through pain and doesn’t complain. We are fortunate to have him in our program.”
Last season as a sophomore for Avon, Jones hit .333, with 6 HR’s, 6 2B, 24 RBI, and posted a .986 fielding percentage. Drosche expects Jones to continue putting up big numbers this upcoming spring and to be a major contributor to the team both offensively and defensively.
“He will be a major part of our offense, especially with his power at the plate. We will have a lot of speed in front of him, so I expect big RBI numbers from him this year. I think he is one of the best overall catchers in the state, and Dylan is versatile enough to where we can use him at either corner infield position also this season. He really excelled last year with our hitting philosophy and put up very good numbers. His experience and leadership abilities will be crucial for us this season with our younger players. “
Jones has high expectations for himself as he enters his junior year at Avon, and is currently working hard to improve on his speed and arm strength.
“I expect myself to be All-Hendricks County, All-Hoosier Crossroads Conference, and All-West. My major goal this year is to be noticed as one of the top catchers in the state and get nominated to the All-State team.”
“One thing I am going to try to improve on this winter is my speed and arm strength. I also want to work on my power at the plate.”
Jones is a prospect that has shown significant improvement over the course of his high school career. If he continues to improve at the rate he has shown, expect Jones to be a legitimate Division 1 catcher.
Jones will help lead a young, but talented Avon team this upcoming season, and will play for travel baseball powerhouse Indiana Bulls 17U team.
