2013 Prospect Watch: Carlos Ortiz (Lincoln West)

Hidden in the Federal League of Cleveland, Ohio, college coaches will find Carlos Ortiz, one of the top outfielders in Ohio’s Class of 2013.
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound athletic outfielder from Lincoln West High School has hit the showcase circuit this fall, and he will surely see his stock rise heading into next summer.
Ortiz, who is a left-handed hitting and throwing prospect, possess a smooth swing. He uses a balanced setup with a confident approach. He has a quick and easy load while consistently keeping his hands inside the baseball. His explosive bat speed generates power to all fields.
From the outfield, Oritz posses a Division I arm. He plays through the baseball and uses short, easy arm action to generate a velocity of 85-87 mph.
With above average talent in several areas of his game, Ortiz says, “My strengths are that I can stay mentally and physically strong as a player and learn from my mistakes.”
He goes on to note, “Also, I hit very well (for power and contact); throw the ball with consistency to my target; and get great reads on the ball from the outfield.”
With the recruiting process just starting for Oritz, he is hearing from multiple Division I and Division II schools.
“When looking for a school, I fall very hard on the education and the what the school can do for me.”
Last spring, Ortiz hit .547 with 23 runs and 23 hits over 42 at bats.
Next summer, he will be playing for the Up to Bat Titans.
Oritiz currently holds a 3.6 GPA and has not taken the ACT or SAT.
