11.3 Prospect ID: Underclassmen Scouting Reports

On Sunday, November 3, 2013 Prep Baseball Report hosted an open Prospect Identification event at Bettis Family Sports Complex in Topeka, Kansas.  The camp was capped at 40 players, 30 of which participated in the position player workouts.  This is the third of three feature stories covering the position players at the event - scouting reports on the seven underclassmen (class of 2016, 2017):

Riley Mason, 2B/OF, Shawnee Heights HS, Class of 2016
The 6-foot, 164-pound Mason is a right-hand hitting second baseman/outfielder.  He hits from a tall stance with no load and average balance throughout.  His bat path works inside out, which produced a lot of contact to the opposite field during batting practice. His top exit velocity was 69 mph. In the outfield he showed average feet and hands.  His top outfield throwing velocity was clocked at 71 mph, infield velocity  registered 69 mph.  He ran a 7.68 60-yard dash.  To read about Mason’s pitching performance at this event click here.

Martin Radosevic, OF, Rockhurst HS (MO), Class of 2016
The 6-foot, 186-pound Radosevic is a left-hand hitting outfielder with athletic frame and strong lower half.  He showed a balanced set up, smooth load and short stride in batting practice.  He has good balance throughout his swing.  He drops his hands some but was able to drive the ball to the opposite field a number of times.  In the outfield he has average footwork and hands.  He throws with a loose arm and ¾ slot with some accuracy.  His top throwing velocity was clocked at 77 mph.  He ran a 7.19 60-yard dash.  Just a sophomore in high school, he is definitely a player to follow.

Devin Rodriguez, OF, Topeka HS, Class of 2016
The 5-foot-9, 133-pound Rodriguez is a right-hand hitting outfielder that hits from a closed stance with no load and short stride.  He pulls off a bit and lacks extension.  His exit velocity registered 69 mph on the radar gun.  In the outfield he threw from a ¾ slot with some accuracy.  His top outfield velocity was 66 mph.  He ran a 7.13 60-yard dash.  Rodriguez also pitched at this event, click here to read his scouting report.

Logan Schmidt, 1B/3B, Shawnee Heights HS, Class of 2017
Schmidt is physical 6-foot, 200-pound corner infielder that hits left, throws right.  At the plate he hits form a slight crouch with a fluid load.  He uses a reverse toe tap followed by a short stride.  He has good balance throughout his swing and is mostly a line-drive hitter at this stage with a top exit velocity of 82 mph.  At first base he showed average hands and feet.  His top throwing velocity was 68 mph.  He ran an 8.07 60-yard dash.  Just a freshman, he has well above average strength now with the potential to develop into a formidable power bat down the road.

AJ Shaw, OF, Hayden HS, Class of 2017
Shaw is a lanky-athletic 5-foot-11, 140-pound left-hand hitting outfielder.  He hits from an open stance with a short stride and has good balance throughout.  He drops his hands some but is able to deliver the barrel and hit line drives.  He’s strong for a 140-pounder and generates some bat speed – his top exit velocity was 82 mph.  In the outfield he demonstrated quick footwork, clean exchanges and made a number of accurate throws using short, quick arm action.  His top throwing velocity was 76 mph.  His 60-yard dash time was 7.94.  Being just a freshman, he’s a player to keep an eye on – as both a pitcher and position player.  Shaw was one of the top pitching prospects of the event, to read about his performance on the mound click here.

Kellen Sojka, IF, Blue Springs South HS (MO), Class of 2016
Sojka is a 6-foot, 150-pound left-hand hitting infielder.  At the plate he hits from a tall set up using a short stride.  He has a short, slightly uphill bat path and line drive approach.  He generates some leverage but needs to add strength.  His exit velocity was clocked as high as 73 mph.  In the infield he showed average hands and feet throwing from a ¾ slot with some accuracy.  Sojka’s top throwing velocity was 69 mph.  He ran a 7.85 60-yard dash.

Maison Stites, IF, Lee’s Summit North HS (MO), Class of 2016
Stites features a lanky, long-legged 6-foot-1, 165-pound frame with plenty of room to fill out.  He hits from tall, open stance and has a short stride.  Right now he has average balance and bat speed.  He has a solid approach overall and is a line drive, gap-to-gap type of hitter.  His top exit velocity was timed at 80 mph.  In the infield he has fluid footwork and soft hands.  He throws with a loose motion from a ¾ slot – making several strong, accurate throws from shortstop.  Despite being just a sophomore, he had to second best infield throwing velocity at 82 mph.  His 60-yard dash time was 7.80.
