On Sunday, November 3, 2013 Prep Baseball Report hosted an open Prospect Identification event at Bettis Family Sports Complex in Topeka, Kansas.  The camp was capped at 40 players, 30 of which participated in the position player workouts.  This is the second of three feature stories covering the position players at the event - scouting reports on the class of 2015 group:

top prospects

1. Jared Robbins, Rockhurst HS (MO), Class of 2015
Robbins is an athletic-framed 6-foot, 165-pound right hand hitting outfielder with solid across the board tools.  During batting practice he showed a balanced set up, smooth load and short stride.  His lower half works well and has good balance throughout.  He showed good bat speed and a level swing, gap-to-gap approach and fluid rhythm.  His exit velocity high was 84 mph.  In the outfield he played through the ball well and threw with a loose ¾ arm action with throws clocked as high as 85 mph.  Robbins was the most accurate thrower in the outfield group and also ran a camp best 6.85 60-yard dash.  Click here to read Robbins’ pitching scouting report from this event.

2. Tyler Mars, 1B/OF, DeSoto HS, Class of 2015
Mars is physical and athletic 6-foot-2, 185-pound first-baseman/outfielder.  During batting practice he worked from a closed stance and short stride.  He starts with a slight arm bar but has loose hands and explosive bat speed.  He has good balance throughout his swing and works mostly gap-to-gap.  His exit velocity was clocked at a camp-best 91 mph.  In the outfield he showed quick, clean arm action delivering a number of accurate throws with a top velocity of 81 mph.  At first base he showed soft hands and fluid footwork.  Overall he’s a good athlete with present strength and bat speed.  He ran a 7.12 60-yard dash.

3. Nathan Reeder, OF, Shawnee Mission Northwest, Class of 2015
Reeder is a 5-foot-9, 168-pound left-hand hitting outfielder with an athletic frame and strong lower half.  He took by far the best round of batting practice at the event.  He has an open stance and medium, controlled stride.  His hands work and he showed a fluid rhythm as he hit oppo line drive after oppo line drive.  His exit velocity was clocked at 88 mph.  In the outfield, he throws with short, quick arm action producing a number of accurate throws with a top throwing velocity of 83 mph.  He ran a 7.10 60-yard dash.

4. Kyle Klomfahs, OF, Olathe Northwest HS, Class of 2015
The physically impressive 6-foot-2, 195-pound Klomfahs hit from an open stance, no stride, no load and ashort path to the baseball – impressive for a long-armed individual.  He demonstrated a gap-to-gap approach.  He’s a strong kid with good bat speed. His exit velocity was clocked at 89 mph, one of the best readings of the day.  In the outfield he has long, slinging arm action that produced a throwing velocity of 88 mph, the top mark in camp.  Additionally, he was one of the most accurate throwers from the outfield.  His 60-yard dash was timed at 7.33

5. Michael Briggs, C/1B, O’Hara HS (MO), Class of 2015
Briggs is a strong, wide-shouldered 6-foot-1, 205-pound catcher.  At the plate he has an open set-up and strides inline with the pitcher.  He drops his hands some creating length in his swing but is able to produce good bat speed – as evidenced by his 88 mph exit velocity time, one of the top times in camp.  He was the top throwing catcher in the camp with pop times ranging from 2.02 to 2.15 and throwing velocity of 78 mph.  He ran a 7.45 60-yard dash.

6. Thomas Elms, OF, Blue Valley Northwest HS, Class of 2015
Elms is a very athletic 6-foot, 145-pound infielder/outfielder.  At the plate, he has balanced set-up with an open stance.  He employs a very short stride (open stance, strides closed) approach and simple, quiet load making the delivery of the barrel easy for him.  Elms showed a level bat path and has overall fluid rhythm his swing.  His exit velocity was clocked at 77 mph.  In the outfield he showed quick feet, clean exchanges and worked through the ball well on his throws.  He has short arm action and it works free and easy with throws up to 79 mph.  In the infield he showed easy actions and throws.  His infield throwing velocity checked in at 77 mph.  Elms ran a 6.89 60-yard dash, one of the best times in the camp.  Due to his overall athleticism and skill set he’s on the path to being a solid college prospect but needs to add some strength and size over the next year.

7. Colt Rusnak, IF, Olathe South HS, Class of 2015
Rusnak is an athletic switch-hitting middle infielder that hits with an open stance and smooth load.  He showed good balance throughout his swing.  His bat path is short to the ball from both sides with a fluid rhythm and has a line-drive approach.  His exit velocity was clocked at 77 mph. He has the makings of an effective top of the order offensive player.  In the infield he has quick feet and a clean exchange.  He made accurate throws with good carry.  Rusnak’s infield throwing velocity was 76 mph and he ran a 7.26 60-yard dash. 

Best of the Rest (Alphabetical Order)

Jarred Collom, IF, Seaman HS, Class of 2015
Collom is a 5-foot-8, 135-pound right-hand hitting infielder.  During the infield workouts he showed average actions and threw from a ¾ slot with a top throwing velocity of 66 mph.  At the plate he has a closed stance with a simple stride.  Collom’s swing path is slightly uphill.  His exit velocity registered 64 mph on the radar gun and he ran a 7.94 60-yard dash.  Collom also pitched at this event, to read his scouting report click here.

Zakary McAlister-Klausner, OF, Lawrence HS, Class of 2015
McAlister-Klausner is an athletic-framed 6-foot-1, 175-pound right-hand hitting outfielder.  During batting practice he hit from a tall stance with a slight arm bar in his load.  He has a toe tap followed by a short stride.  He showed good balance throughout.  He has a level bat path that produces a number of line drives with an exit velocity best of 83 mph.  In the outfield he throws with long arm action, throwing with some accuracy and a top throwing velocity of 78 mph.  His 60-yard dash time was 7.38.  McAlister-Klausner also pitched at this event, to read about it click here.

Myles Smits, C/OF, Olathe Northwest HS, Class of 2015
Smits is 5-foot-11, 172-pound catcher.  He hits from a slight crouch using no hand load and with a quick leg kick stride.  He has some hand strength and an uphill swing path.  His exit velocity was clocked at 78 mph.  Behind the plate he has a long exchange.  His pop times ranged from 2.32 to 2.38.  His top throwing velocity was 67 mph.  He ran a 7.61 60-yard dash.

Dalton Sutherland, IF, Topeka West HS, Class of 2015
Sutherland is a 5-foot-8, 180-pound right-hand hitting infielder.  At the plate, he has a closed stance and short stride.  He drops his hands during his load and has average balance throughout his swing.  He’s a pull hitter.  His exit velocity was timed at 79 mph.  His top throwing velocity during infield workouts was 68 mph with a 60-yard dash time of 7.97.

Joey Verstegen, OF, Newman Catholic HS (IA), Class of 2015
Verstagen is a 6-foot-1, 175 pound outfielder from Iowa.  During batting practice he showed a closed set-up with a slight bat wrap load.  He has a short stride and average balance throughout his swing.  His bat path is level and he is a pull type of hitter.  Hit top exit velocity was clocked at 82 mph.  In the outfield has fairly quick feet and his exchanges were clean.  Verstegen’s arm works well and he made a number of accurate throws.  His top throwing velocity was 79 mph.  Click here to read Verstegen’s pitching scouting report from this event.  His 60-yard dash time was 7.58.
