Competition for the top spot was fairly easy as Stroudsburg's Mike Nikorak continues to hold down the top ranking not only in Pennsylvania but in the combined rankings across the 20 Prep Baseball Report states as well. The athletic 6-foot-4, 205-pound right-hander started the Under Armour All-American game for the American team this summer at Wrigley Field and showed no signs of nerves. The Alabama recruit retired the side in order with two strikeouts. His fastball sat predominately at 93 mph, topping at 94. Unlike many of the pitchers at the event, Nikorak produces premium velocity with little effort. Aside from his fastball velocity, Nikorak also showed an advanced three-pitch mix. His changeup looks to be a plus offering, as he threw a few with late arm-side sink. He recorded a strikeout with a 79-mph changeup and also consistently threw his 76-78 mph curveball for strikes.
Biggest Risers
RHP Chad Luensmann (Bellwood-Antis) moved into the top ten at No. 8 following a strong showing in Jupiter. Luensmann got the start in Mid-Atlantic PG Orange’s game against Team Elite Prime. The Nebraska recruit allowed an unearned run on one hit and cruised through five innings, striking out five. Luensmann has good life on his fastball, which started out at 88-90 and then settled into the 86-88 range, and got 11 of the 17 batters he faced to hit ground balls. Nine were outs while the other two were an infield single and error. He has an up tempo delivery with a high leg kick and pitches from a 3/4 slot. He broke three bats in his outing. He secondary stuff needs work as he tends to wrap his breaking balls. His changeup and slider showed the best potential today and he worked in a curveball as well.
Left-handed pitchers Patrick Doudican (Neumann-Goretti), a College of Charleston recruit, and Zach Guth (Franklin), a Maryland recruit, continue to ascend the rankings moving to No. 9 and No. 10 respectively. Guth, originally committed to Indiana, but switched his decision following a coaching staff change in Hoosier land.
Deepest Class in Years
The 2015 Class showed signs of its depth as early as 24 months ago. The class currently boasts 49 commitments among the top 50 prospects in the rankings and 86 committed players in the top 100 spots. Among Division 1 conferences the ACC leads the way landing 12 of the top 25 ranked players in the class including four of the top five. The Big Ten follows with four recruits among the top 25 thanks in large part to Penn State landing three.
