Top Prospect Games II: Catcher Analysis

30 players from across the Old Line State, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, participated in this year's PBR Maryland Top Prospect Games II at Mount St. Mary's University. Players were put through a pro-style workout and played a simulated game in front of our PBR Maryland scouting staff with Trackman and Blast also on hand to record data. Below are evaluations on the six catchers from the event.

Cody Furman C / OF / Gettysburg Area, PA / 2023
Body: 5’10’’, 190 pounds. Strong, physical body frame. Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, open stance at the plate. Smooth, rhythmic type back load with solid hand separation and an elongated stride. Short, compact stroke and stays behind the ball well with quick hands through the zone. Strong lower half involvement with a slight uphill swing path. Gap-to-gap line drive approach with pull side tendencies. Strong one handed finish. Power: 91 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Pull side pop present. Arm: RH. C - 76 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Defense: Pop times ranged 2.01 - 2.16. Quick, active feet with momentum towards the throw to second base. Gains ground well and replaces feet with quick, clean exchanges. Accurate throws to the bag that showed carry. Run: 7.27 60-yard time.

Ryan Jones C / RHP / Littlestown, PA / 2024
Body: 5’9’’, 155 pounds. Athletic body type. Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, squared, slightly crouched stance at the plate. Slight bat wiggle with a smooth, rhythmic toe-tap back load. Stays behind the ball well with quick hands through the zone. Gets solid extension through contact with some lower half involvement. Slightly uphill swing path with a strong one handed finish. Worked mostly middle to pull side with a solid line drive approach during BP. Power: 84 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Arm: RH. C - 73 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a mid to high three-quarter slot. Defense: Pop times ranged 2.01 - 2.19. Quick feet, active feet with momentum towards the throw to second base. Replaces feet well with clean exchanges and accurate throws that showed some carry. Run: 7.57 60-yard time.

Nick Pratt C / OF / Indian Creek School, MD / 2023
Body: 6’0’’, 170 pounds. Athletic body frame Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, slightly crouched stance at the plate. Rhythmic type back load with solid hand separation and a longer stride. Stays short to the ball with loose hands and quick bat speed through the zone. Solid extension through the zone and past contact with strong lower half involvement. Slightly uphill swing path with a strong two handed finish. Worked mostly gap-to-gap during BP. Power: 93 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Pull side pop present with more projected. Arm: RH. C - 68 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Defense: Pop times ranged 2.13 - 2.26. Quick footwork behind the dish and replaces feet well with quick, clean exchanges. Gains ground on throws to second base. Run: 7.71 60-yard time.

Ashten Snelsire C / 2B / Stephen Decatur, MD / 2022
Body: 6’2’’, 195 pounds. Strong, athletic, physical body type. Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, slightly open, crouched stance at the plate. Smooth back load with hands pre-set. Stays behind the ball well with a short, compact swing. Quick hands and bat speed through the zone and strong lower half involvement with solid extension through the zone and past contact. Ball comes off the bat well with consistent hard contact and a strong one handed finish. Gap-to-gap line drive approach with strength to the pull side. Power: 91 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Present strength and power to the pull side with more projected. Arm: RH. C - 75 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a mid to high three-quarter slot. Defense: Pop times ranged 2.09 - 2.14. Quick, active feet behind the dish and gains ground well on throws to second base. Replaces feet well with a quick release. Consistent clean exchanges with throws that showed some accuracy and carry. Run: 7.47 60-yard time.

Michael Sweeney C / C / Mount St. Joseph, MD / 2021
Body: 5’9’’, 170 pounds. Strong, solid body type. Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, open stance at the plate with a smooth, rhythmic back load. Controlled stride with some hand separation. Stays behind the ball well with balance and strong lower half involvement. Short to the ball with a compact, slightly uphill swing path. Gets extension through contact and showed a strong two-handed finish. Solid gap-to-gap line drive approach. Power: 88 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Strength present in the swing with power to the alleys. Arm: RH. C - 78 mph. Throws with short arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Defense: Pop times ranged 2.01 - 2.15. Quick footwork and clean exchanges. Gains grounds on throws to second. Throws were accurate and showed carry on a few. Run: 7.37 60-yard time.

Bronson Taylor C / 3B / St Maria Goretti , MD / 2023
Body: 5’9’’, 175 pounds. Athletic body frame. Hit: LHH. Hits from a balanced, square, upright stance at the plate. Gets the foot down early with a smooth back load and solid hand separation. Hands pre-set and stays behind the ball well with quick hands and bat speed through the zone. Excellent extension through contact with strong lower half involvement. Slight uphill swing path with solid middle to pull side approach during BP. Power: 83 mph exit velocity per TrackMan during BP. Some pull side pop present with more projected. Arm: RH. C - 70 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Defense: Pop times ranged 1.97 - 2.09. Quick, active feet behind the dish. Gains ground on throws to second base with quick, clean exchanges. Run: 7.97 60-yard time.
