Scouting / Operations

It was a historic preseason here in Pennsylvania with our boots-on-the-ground scouting staff covering 700+ players at showcase events, all February long. The dust has settled and we are now ramping up our efforts in player rankings, scouting reports, and recap articles. While the outcome of the 2020 HS season is on hold, the Prep Baseball Report (PA) will continue to provide unrivaled coverage for the amateur baseball players in the Keystone State.

Scouting Report

2/22/20

Demonstrated a lean, athletic 5-foot-8, 165-pound frame with present twitch and room to add strength as he matures. The right-handed hitter begins with a wide, even stance utilizing bat wiggle at the top with a lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Generated sink into a strong lower half allowing for lift through a slightly uphill path in the hitting zone. Created easy backspin to all fields while staying through the hitting window for an extended period of time. Showcased advanced barrel control during batting practice while recording a 90 mph bat-exit velocity. Ran a 6.72 60-yard dash displaying his athleticism in his movements. The primary outfielder showed advanced footwork arriving on time to the ball and playing through it with authority yielding accurate 88 mph arm-strength out of a fluid, high ¾ arm-slot from his position. The right-handed pitcher sat 84-87 mph with occasional arm-side run out of a compact delivery featuring a quick, high ¾ arm-slot. Mixed in a sharp 68-71 mph curveball with late 11/5 movement thrown with near fastball arm-speed.

Standout Skill

The overall impressive showing makes it hard to choose but will go with the bat. He is aggressive with his strong lower half generating barrel whip that stays through the hitting zone. Has present pop off the bat with the ability to hit to all fields and the potential for more power to develop.

Player Projection

Ability to be a 2-way guy at the next level. Defensively, with his speed, athleticism and arm strength he can play anywhere in the outfield. On the mound he ran the fastball up to 87 with arm side run and life through the zone. Also showed a good feel for a sharp curveball with 11-5 shape.

Quick Hit

"Coughlin has a compact, well built frame at 5-foot-8, 165lbs with a strong lower half. His athleticism and explosiveness shows in everything he does on the field, 6.72 60 -time, 90 MPH raw exit-velocity, 88 MPH OF velo and up to 87 on the mound. Will be an exciting follow in the '22 class."
