Scouting Notes: Strath Haven at Conestoga

Kevin Bosco threw a complete game as Strath Haven remained undefeated (10-0), beating the #15 ranked Conestoga Pioneers 5-3 in a Central League showdown. Bosco, a 2013 RHP, allowed just four hits through seven innings of work, striking out five and walking six. He threw 118 pitches on the day, 68 of which were strikes.  

Kevin Mohollen (2104) took a walk to begin the game for the Panthers and promptly swiped second and third on consecutive pitches. A deep fly ball to left from Donovan Davis (1-for-2, 1B, 1 RBI, 1 R, 2 BB) allowed Mohollen to score, putting Strath Haven on top 1-0 after the top of the first inning.  

Conestoga would not wait long to respond though, as Max Dolente (2014) launched a deep double to left field in the bottom of the first, scoring 2014 Stephen Born (1-for-2, 2 BB, 2 R) and 2014 Penn State recruit, Tommy Richter (2-for-3, 1 BB, 1 R), both of whom had been walked by Bosco. Dolente's double pushed Conestoga back on top by a score of 2-1, but that would be the last lead of the game for the Pioneers.  

Strath Haven received some timely, two-out hitting in the second frame, as 2014 2B Nate Engleka hit a two-run double, scoring Kevin Bosco and 2015 James Kantner, putting the Panthers on top for good by a score of 3-2. The Panthers would score single runs in the third and fifth innings, and were leading 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning.  

Bosco remained on the mound in the seventh inning for Strath Haven, and was able to keep the top of the Conestoga order in check, allowing one run in the inning, securing a 5-3 win for the Panthers.  

+ 2014 LHP Drew Jackson (Conestoga), was the tough luck loser on the day, going five complete innings, surrendering just 3 hits, and striking out 7. The 5-foot-11 lefty used an over the top delivery and a 78-81 mph fastball with a significant amount of late tail to hold the powerful Strath Haven lineup down for most of the contest. Jackson also mixed in an over-the-top 12/6 breaking ball that had a sharp drop and sat between 65-68 mph. The southpaw has a loose arm, incorporating a full circle into his mechanics.  

+ 2014 SS and Penn State commit, Tommy Richter (Conestoga) was impressive throughout the game. Defensively, the 5-foot-9 middle infielder showed good actions with a smooth glove, strong first step, quick transfer and rocket arm. The left-handed hitting Richter was 2-for-3 on the day, using a balanced lower half with good extension through the zone to compliment his patient approach.  

+ 2013 3B Donovan Davis (Strath Haven) showed good lateral movement while manning the hot corner. The senior has plus arm strength, with an overhand motion producing chest-high and on line carry across the diamond. Offensively, the right-handed hitting Davis starts with an open, balanced stance, using a bit of a hip-slide as he attacks the pitch. Davis has a strong upper body and creates significant whip with his hip rotation coming through the zone.  

Mohollen+ 2014 C Kevin Mohollen (Strath Haven) was impressive behind the plate and at the dish. Defensively, Mohollen used good footwork and a short arm path starting at the ear resulting in a quick release (1.88 and 1.92 pop times). The junior backstop was able to help his battery mate (Kevin Bosco) by using soft hands to receive and present the ball well throughout all seven innings. Offensively, Mohollen displayed a fluid, compact, and powerful swing, despite the fact that he had little to show for his efforts (two screaming line drives to the fence in center and left). Starting with a slightly open stance, the right-handed hitting Mohollen is a line-drive hitter with plus power. He hits from a power position, using explosive hips and and a short swing to produce line-drive capability to all fields. An outstanding fastball hitter, Mohollen keeps his lead arm soft, stays inside the baseball and gets good extension through contact. Mohollen also showed impressive speed, swiping two bags, and displaying a time of 4.22 seconds from home to first.
