By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

Nick SpanglerSS/RHP Nick Spangler hit .457 in 2013, was named 2nd Team All-State and participated as a member of Team PA at the 2013 Big 26 Classic. The 5-foot-9, 160-pound two-way prospect sat 80-83 off the mound as a pitcher for Team Pennsylvania and showed a quick release with a 77 mph arm across the diamond during the Fall College Prospect Program.

Ranked No. 76 in the PA Class of 2014, Spangler recently announced his commitment to Shippensburg University. Prep Baseball Report spoke to him about his college decision and the recruiting process.

PBR:  Where have you decided to attend college and why did you make this choice?

Spangler: I have decided to attend Shippensburg University. I felt like it was the right choice for me.  When I first met the coaching staff and visited the school, I instantly felt at home. They have a very successful baseball program and I feel like they can help me get to the next level.

PBR:  What other schools were you considering?

I was also considering West Virginia, Saint Joseph’s and Bloomsburg.

PBR:  Was distance from home a factor in your decision?

Spangler: It wasn’t the deciding factor.

PBR:  Where did the coaches first see you?  How did your relationship develop with their coaching staff?

Spangler: Their coaches saw me during my junior year of high school baseball and during the run we had in the American Legion playoffs last summer.

PBR:  What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?

Spangler: Hopefully to come in and play right away. They expect me to get good grades and be ready to compete day in and day out on the field and in the weight room.

PBR:  What is your biggest strength as a player and how do you feel that will help your team?

Spangler: My biggest strength as a player is defense and leadership. A couple of years into college ball, I can hopefully be the player incoming recruits and other players look up to, and lead by example.

PBR:  Who do you play for in the summer and what was your most memorable experience from this past summer?

Spangler: During the summer, I played for the Mid Atlantic Rookies.  The most memorable experience I had with this team was playing down in Jupiter, Florida in the WWBA Championship Tournament against some of the best players in the U.S.

PBR:  What is your current GPA?

Spangler: My current GPA is a 3.7.

PBR:  Now that you have your commitment out of the way, what are your goals both individually and for the team going into your senior season?

Spangler: Individually, I want to be the best player I can be and do whatever it takes to help our team win.  As a team, we want to repeat as division champions and win the county championship. Also, we want to continue our streak of getting into the district tournament and make it into the state tournament.

PBR: How did Prep Baseball Report aid you in gaining exposure as a potential college baseball recruit?

Spangler: PBR helped get my name out there. They identify the certain things college coaches look for in a player.
