Progress Report: '24 MIF Matt Atchley (Pennridge)
May 7, 2023
Throughout the spring, we will be comparing some of the improvements made from the biggest winners of the preseason. One of our favorite annual events, ID: East took place on 2/26 this year in Palmyra, PA where almost 200 players joined us for a traditional showcase. Among the standouts, '24 MIF Matt Atchley (Pennridge) impressed with efficient power transfer and A/AVG body control from the LH box.
Matt Atchley 2B / SS / Pennridge, PA / 2024Rankings StateRank: 102 / POS: 1
Previous Look Notes: 2/25/22, PA Shockers Scout Day. Strong, physical swing at 6-foot, 180-pounds that matches plane with occasional loft to the pull-side. Hits behind the front leg and keeps the barrel long through the zone. Recorded an 88MPH exit velocity with a 50% fly ball rate during his round, his furthest blast up to an estimated 302FT. Chance to situationally hit with good direction at the plate. A 7.40 run in the 60YD will push the glove to a 2B or 3B spot, as an 84MPH INF arm carries accurately across the diamond. Recent Improvements: 2/26/23, ID: East. A full year later, there's additional power up and down the frame. Listed at 6-foot-1, 193-pounds, Atchley flashed more consistent bat-speed in February (+11MPH) and a heightened MEV (+9MPH), up to T97. Likewise, he tacked on a 361FT batted ball distance and 92% sweet spot, both marks easily clearing previous bests. The hit tool continues trending upwards, especially after an impact spring offensively. Gained some tangible arm-strength too, reaching back for 86MPH from shortstop. Quality handle on the run with ability to change angles. Projection: All things considered, Atchley will hold down a corner IF role at the next level, where he will be recruited to swing it first-and-foremost. Not only does the Pennridge product do a solid job of cutting down strikeouts, but there's enough juice to run it out of the yard at any point to CF/RF. Should be a name-to-know this summer on the tournament scene for the PA Shockers. Future RBI potential anywhere between 2-6 in the order. |
