Progress Report: 2024 SS/RHP Rory Finn (Springside Chestnut Hill)

Ted Williams
Director of Scouting, PA

This week's highlight follows a top performer from the Preseason All-State East and compares the improvements made over a year's time. A Sophomore two-way prospect has made numerous leaps since a breakout at the Inter-AC scout day this past summer and continues trending upwards.

PROGRESS Report

Last Look NotesAugust 31, 2021, Inter-AC Scout Day, The strong, durable 5-foot-10, 170lb two-way prospect flashed good connection in the box and drove the ball to the pull-side gap with flush contact. Recorded a T94 mph bat-exit velocity (86 mph AVG) and took one of the more balanced rounds of batting practice, then sliding over to the middle infield for a clean slate of reps in either direction. The arm-strength really carried across the diamond working up to an 82 mph best and transferred to the mound for a strike-throwing operation (81 mph peak FB). Continued feel for his offspeed has been welcomed with solid lateral shape on an upper 60's SL (2350rpms).
Recent ImprovementsFebruary 27, 2022, Preseason All-State East, Finn arrived with a little more physicality and was a winner in all phases. The right-handed hitter put forth a complete batting practice effort with increases in batted ball distance (+50 feet, 357 feet), sweet spot rate (+40%, 100%), hard hit rate (+27%, 57%), max FB (+5 mph, 86 mph), and AVG bat-exit velocity (+5 mph, 91 mph) among other things. Most impressively, he jumped on the mound with advanced spin traits on FB/SL and held the zone comfortably, showing signs of more velocity to come in the arm-action. With a surefire feel for the game and similar improvements to his brother Sean around the same age (UCONN commit), the stock is heading north quickly and warrants a close follow in the class.
