PIAA State Championships Wrap-up

Three one run games, an extra-inning thriller and a complete game shutout highlighted the culmination of the 2013 PIAA baseball season. In the end, four teams earned the right to be called "State Champions".

Class A:  Johnsonburg 5, Canton 0

Junior RHP Cole Peterson pitched only the 6th complete game shutout in PIAA Championships history, allowing just three hits while striking out six. Peterson sat 82-84 all afternoon with command of a 74 mph curveball. Canton junior RHP Garrett Wesneski was nearly as effective until the bottom of the 6th inning. Wesneski sat 84-86 and touched 87 several times in matching Peterson pitch for pitch until Johnsonburg erupted for five runs in the 6th inning for the win.

Class AAA: West York 2, Upper Moreland 1

West York LHP Brandon Kinneman gave up a first inning run, but the Bulldogs answered back with two runs of their own in the top of the 2nd inning to end the scoring in a well played game that was dominated by pitching and defense. The game winning run scored on a 2nd inning squeeze bunt by senior Brandon Rauhauser.

Carson Fries, who went 2-for-3 with a run scored, came on in relief with a man on and nobody out in the bottom of the 6th inning and closed out West York's 2nd AAA Championship in two years. Fries struck out four and walked one in his two innings of work.

Class AA: Loyalsock Township 5, Beaver Area 4

Beaver Area got a two out single by senior 1B Nick Hineman in the top of the 7th inning to knot the score at four but Loyalsock answered with a walk-off RBI single by junior DH Bailey Young to earn the Class AA title. Austin Ross, a Radford recruit was the hard-luck loser for Beaver Area. The senior RHP sat 86-88 all day touching 89 in the first inning. Lancers' RHP Kyle Datres, ranked No. 1 in the PA Class of 2015, was just a bit better going the distance for the win. Datres sat 84-86 touching 87 several times.

Class AAAA: North Penn 6, Lower Dauphin 5 (9 innings)

After three tightly contested games that went down to the wire, it was only fitting that the final game of the day would go extra innings. North Penn (5 run 5th inning) and Lower Dauphin (3 run 3rd inning) traded one big innings early, but it was junior shortstop Kaylor Kulina's RBI single in the 7th inning that pushed the game to extras. North Penn won in walk-off fashion on an RBI single by junior DH Bobby Scott.
