PBR Mid-Atlantic Border Battle: RHP Analysis

The summer rush of PBR events in Pennsylvania and West Virginia kicked into high gear in June with the PA Top Prospect Games (June 17-18), Shenandoah Valley College Prospect Showcase (June 23) and the PA Underclass Games (June 24-25) all offering college coaches a glimpse at some 175 prospects in a short period of time.

The month of July has also been a busy one with the Western PA Open ID Showcase (July 8) and the Eastern PA Open ID Showcase (July 9) offering an additional 75 prospects the ability to showcase their talents.

Prospects from six states recently assembled at Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland for the PBR Mid-Atlantic Border Battle to complete the July schedule of events. Over the course of the next week we will be analyzing the prospects by position that made the trek to Maryland. Today we wrap up our analysis by taking a look at the right-handed pitchers in attendance.

Colin Claus2015 RHP Colin Claus (West Allegheny HS)

Claus worked four scoreless innings striking out six while not allowing a runner to advance past second base. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound uncommitted senior sat 81-83 from a high 3/4 arm slot with some arm side run to his fastball. Claus also displayed command of a 68 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation, a 73 mph slider and a 75 mph changeup. The righty was down a tick in velocity having sat in the mid-80s for much of his 9-1 high school season. Claus has a projectable frame and his fastball shows late life that resulted in plenty of swing thrus from opposing hitters.

Trentin Martin2015 RHP Trentin Martin (Altoona Area HS)

Martin sat 84-86 from a 3/4 arm slot with arm side run and late life to his fastball. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound uncommitted senior displayed a loose arm and a three pitch mix of complimentary pitches. Martin featured a 74 mph curveball, a 78 mph slider and a 78 mph changeup that he was able to command consistently for strikes. The righty allowed one run over five ininngs of work spanning two days of the event.

Joe Molettiere2015 RHP Joe Molettiere (Pennridge HS)

Molettiere took the mound to begin the event and was the most impressive pitcher to toe the rubber over the course of three days. The 6-foot-2, 165-pound righty has an athletic frame and looseness to his deliver that projects for velocity increases as his frame fills out. Molettiere sat 85-87 with his four seam fastball while also displaying a two seamer at 84 mph with decided arm side run. His 81 mph changeup is improving, but it is his 78 mph slider that has tight, late break that stands out. Molettiere worked four scoreless innings striking out six while allowing three hits. The No. 43 ranked prospect in the PA Class of 2015 committed to Monmouth less than a week following his performance.

2015 RHP Sol Averbach (Taylor Allderdice HS)

Averbach sat 79-80 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with a deliberate, high knee delivery. The uncommitted senior worked 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball prior to ending his outing early due to muscle spasms in the back. The 6-foot, 185-pound righty also commanded a 69 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 72 mph changeup that he used often and effectively. Averbach struck out two in his shortened outing on the mound.

2015 RHP Jarrad Choy (Stroudsburg HS)

Choy worked four innings in game action allowing one run while striking out five. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound uncommitted senior sat 81-84 from a 3/4 arm slot with some arm side run to a heavy fastball. Choy held his velocity for four innings and it was evident that there is more yet in the tank. The righty also displayed command of a 72 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation. Choy pounded the strike zone and showed repeatable mechanics with a solid understanding of how to pitch.

2016 RHP Ryan Janvier (Chichester HS)

Janvier sat 78-79 from a high 3/4 arm slot with arm side run to his fastball. The 5-foot-10, 150-pound junior worked four scoreless innings striking out three while allowing three hits. Janvier also mixed a 66 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 70 mph changeup to effectively keep hitters off balance. The righty works quickly and pounds the strike zone. Some additional work to lengthen his throwing motion should allow Janvier to see some additional velocity in the coming years.

2015 RHP Tyler Kight (Penncrest HS)

Kight is a 6-foot-1, 200-pound uncommitted senior that sat 78-81 from an over the top arm slot with cut action to his fastball. The righty worked four innings allowing two runs while also commanding an 11/5 breaking curveball. Kight has a projectable frame and a repeatable delivery that suggests additional velocity gains are likely in the future.

2015 RHP David Lawall (Holy Ghost Prep)

Lawall sat 80-81 from a long 3/4 arm slot with some arm side run to his fastball. The 6-foot2, 190-pound uncommitted senior also commanded a 69 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 71 mph changeup thrown at near fastball arm speed. Lawall worked four innings striking out eight while mixing his three pitches well.

2015 RHP/1B Sam Lazowski (Donegal HS)

Lazowski has a projectable 6-foot-5, 205-pound frame and displayed good rhythm to his delivery during three scoreless innings of work. The uncommitted senior sat 79-82 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with some arm side run to his fastball. Lazowski also commanded a 67 mph curveball, a 71 mph slider and a 69 mph changeup with late fading action. Lazowski displayed capable defensive actions at both 3B and 1B with an 80 mph arm across the diamond. The left-handed hitter registered an 88 mph bat exit velocity and went 3-for-8 at the plate in game action.

2015 RHP Zach Luke (Notre Dame Green Pond HS)

Luke sat 81-83 with some arm side run to his fastball out of a 3/4 arm slot. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound uncommitted senior struck out five in four innings of work. Luke also showcased a 72 mph 11/5 breaking curveball and a 71 mph changeup that he threw for strikes. The righty has an athletic frame and displayed repeatable mechanics that project for velocity gains yet to come.

2015 RHP Bryson Turner (Brandywine Heights HS)

Turner worked four innings allowing one run sitting 80-82 with some arm side run to his fastball. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound uncommitted senior struck out three and displayed the ability to make quality pitches to get out of several jams. Turner also commanded a 68 mph 11/5 breaking curveball and a 74 mph changeup. The righty showed the ability to work fast and challenge hitters working both sides of the plate.

2015 RHP James Wetter (Holy Cross HS)

Wetter worked four innings topping at 81 mph out of a high 3/4 arm slot with some arm side run to his fastball. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound uncommitted senior also displayed a 70 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 74 mph changeup that was thrown at fastball arm speed with some late sink. Wetter registered five strikeouts in his time on the mound.

2016 RHP Travis Wickard (Boiling Springs HS)

Wickard sat 79-81 from a high 3/4 arm slot with some hip coil to his delivery. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound righty allowed two runs over four innings of work while registering one strikeout and retired six batters on ground balls. Wickard also commanded a 68 mph 11/5 breaking curveball and a 69 mph changeup thrown at fastball arm speed. The changeup is still developing but has a chance to be a very solid second pitch for the junior.
