PA Underclass Games Analysis: Outfielders

By Jacob Gill
Philadelphia Region Director of Scouting

The 2015 PBR Pennsylvania Underclass Games took place on June 23-24, with 51 prospects from around the state gathering at Tambur Field on the campus of Misericordia University. Our rundown of the participants continues today with the thirteen outfielders in attendance.

Outfielders

Jordan Art, 2017, OF/RHP, Lakeland
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitter. Started from an open stance and employed a knee-to-knee stride to slightly open. Armbar creates some length, while approach is simple with limited head movement. Ran a 7.41 60-yard dash and 4.69 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 80-mph exit velocity and 76-mph arm strength during workout. Moved well in the outfield and made throws on a low trajectory.

James Balogh, 2018, RHP/OF, Pocono Mountain East
5-foot-10, 155-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from slightly open stance, employing short quick toe-tap. Body came forward with stride, while he stayed on top of the ball well and kept the barrel in the hitting zone. Struggled on day one, but posted three hits, including multiple quality swings against low-80s arms, on day two. Ran a 7.22 60-yard dash and multiple 4.59 in-game home-to-1B times. Showcased 85-mph exit velocity and 78-mph arm strength during workout (ran FB up to 82 in game). Long, loose arm action with accurate throwing arm defensively.

Nick Embleton, 2019, RHP/OF, East Pennsboro
6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed hitter. Started from an open stance and strode to slightly open. Certainly within the context of his youth, he showed good balance, bat speed, and ability to keep his eyes level. Ran a 7.36 60-yard dash and 4.82 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 83-mph exit velocity and 80-mph arm strength during workout. As he sets sail on his high school career, he will benefit from more live reps reading fly balls off the bat, as he took flat angles on balls that took off over his head during game action.

Nate Emerson, 2017, OF, Franklin Regional
5-foot-10, 140-pound right-handed hitter. Started from a square stance and strode slightly closed. Held hands high initially, lowered them to launch and created armbar. Body and bat worked uphill with weight getting into front hip early, inhibiting ability to fully incorporate lower half.  Ran a 6.91 60-yard dash along with 4.31 and 4.41 in-game home-to-1B times. Showcased 76-mph exit velocity and 78-mph arm strength during workout. Solid defensive actions, would benefit from shortening release time.

Austin Kunkel, 2016, RHP/OF, Brandywine Heights
6-foot-2, 170-pound right-handed hitter. Started from a square, narrow stance and strode to slightly closed and wide with some top half dive. Swing path is slightly uphill and has some length to it. Ran a 7.47 60-yard dash and 4.72 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 82-mph exit velocity and 84-mph arm strength during workout. Would benefit defensively from shortening release time and using lower trajectory on throws.

Isaiah Lockette, 2017, OF/RHP, Steelton-Highspire
5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitter. Started from a square stance and took an aggressive, waist-high leg kick to a wide base. Body and head traveled a significant distance with stride. Hyper-aggressive swing with good rhythm to hand load. Would benefit from tightening up his strike zone. Ran a 6.74 60-yard-dash, along with 4.22 and 4.29 in-game home-to-1B times. Showcased 91-mph exit velocity and 84-mph arm strength during workout. Moved well defensively, threw ball with long arm swing from low slot with low trajectory.

Ben Mongelluzzo, 2018, OF/RHP, Penn-Trafford
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from a square stance with a short, lift-and-replace stride. Hands are quiet pre-swing and work through contact well. Repeatable swing has a bit of length coupled with some bat speed. Ran a 7.25 60-yard dash. Showcased 82-mph exit velocity and 76-mph arm strength during workout. Would benefit from more live reps reading fly balls off the bat, as his first step was typically in on balls that ended up over his head during game action.

Adam Morris, 2017, OF, South Park
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitter. Muscular build (also plays football). Hit from slightly open stance with controlled toe-tap. Body comes forward with stride a bit, but keeps eyes relatively level. Showed some feel for getting the barrel to the baseball in game action. Ran a 7.08 60-yard dash, along with 4.50 and 4.57 in-game home-to-1B times. Showcased 79-mph exit velocity and 78-mph arm strength during workout. Left-handed thrower with solid defensive actions.

Luke Muller, 2018, OF, Holy Ghost Prep
5-foot-10, 130-pound right-handed hitter. All-around game would benefit from strength gains. Starts from a slightly open stance, strides on his toe and rolls his front knee in, then strides against to slightly closed. Hands start low and travel a long distance to get loaded, while he would benefit from quieting down some of his moving parts to improve his balance and better repeat his swing. Ran an 8.38 60-yard dash. Showcased 71-mph exit velocity and 64-mph arm strength during workout. Throws from low three-quarter slot with low elbow and arced trajectory.

Santino Nave’, 2017, RHP/OF, Roman Catholic
5-foot-9, 155-pound right-handed hitter. Started from slightly open stance and strode to square. Quiet approach with some armbar, slightly uphill path, and limited use of lower half. Ran a 7.20 60-yard dash and 4.62 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 80-mph exit velocity and 78-mph arm strength (ran FB up to 81 in game). Exhibited athletic actions defensively with accurate throws on a low trajectory.

Nick Picariello, 2017, OF/RHP, Germantown Academy
5-foot-9, 185-pound right-handed hitter. Strength in frame with some gap power potential. Started from slightly open stance with slow draw of weight to backside and strode to square. Body comes forward with stride and swing path has some length at times. Ran a 7.49 60-yard dash and 4.81 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 84-mph exit velocity and 85-mph arm strength during workout. Solid arm strength and accuracy from three-quarter slot.

Dominic Verrastro, 2018, OF, Lakeland
5-foot-10, 145-pound right-handed hitter. Started from wide open stance and strode on toe to slightly closed. Weight heavy on backside with limited incorporation of lower half into slightly uphill, pull-oriented swing. Ran a 7.63 60-yard-dash and averaged a 4.87 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 73-mph exit velocity and 79-mph arm strength. Moved well defensively, low trajectory on throws with long release.

Aaron Zechman, 2016, RHP/OF, Selinsgrove Area
6-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from a square stance with near-waist-high leg kick. Good balance, keeps head still, repeats swing. Ran a 7.38 60-yard dash and 4.82 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 84-mph exit velocity and 79-mph arm strength during workout. Moved well in the outfield with low trajectory on throws.
