By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting
The summer rush of PBR events in Pennsylvania and West Virginia kicked into high gear over the past two weeks with the PA Top Prospect Games (June 17-18), Shenandoah Valley College Prospect Showcase (June 23) and the PA Underclass Games (June 24-25) offering college coaches a glimpse at some 175 prospects in a short period of time.
Over the course of the past week we have been analyzing the prospects that performed by position. Today we take a look at the middle infielders that participated in the PA Top Prospect Games.
PA Top Prospect Games:
Middle infielders
Top Prospect
SS Grayson Miller (East Pennsboro), 2015
Miller took one of the most impressive rounds of batting practice at the PA Top Prospect Games displaying a 95 mph bat exit velocity and excellent barrel whip. The right-handed hitter drove baseballs to the pull side and the ball jumped off his barrel from a square stance.
Miller showed good feet (6.98 60-yard dash) and an 81 mph arm across the diamond. The 5-foot-10, 180-pounder is likely to make a defensive move at the next level to a corner infield or outfield position and showcased the arm strength to be able to do so.
Miller arrived at the event uncommitted but has since announced his commitment to Millersville University.
Best of the Rest (alphabetical)
2B/3B Joe Campagna (Blackhawk), 2015
Campagna missed day one activities, but made the most of his day two opportunity by going 2-for-3 with an opposite field home run in game action. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound right-handed hitter has a physical build and a quiet approach at the plate with a strong lower half that creates barrel whip. Campagna has displayed capable actions at 2B and the athleticism that would allow him to play a corner outfield spot or make the slide to 3B at the next level.
2B/SS Kordell Collins (Juniata Valley), 2015
Collins is a right handed hitter that starts from an open stance and strides closed. His launch position is tight to his body allowing him to stay short to the baseball but limiting his power. Collins routinely squared the baseball in batting practice and had a number of quality at bats in game play. The 5-foot-10, 150-pound uncommitted senior turned in one of the top 60-yard dash times of the event at 6.74 and showcased good range with soft hands in the infield. Collins was dealing with a slight injury to his throwing arm, but showed more than ample arm strength and a quick release in spite of the ailment.
2B/3B Colton Currey (Central Dauphin), 2015
Currey is a 5-foot-9, 170-pound 2B that has a solid frame and creates barrel whip from a slightly open stance with a bat exit velocity of 88 mph. The right-handed hitter showed the ability to drive the baseball to the pull side and capable actions defensively. Currey's 6.74 foot speed and limitations in arm strength (75 mph across diamond) may necessitate a move to the outfield at the next level.
SS/2B Nate Fassnacht (Ephrata), 2016
Fassnacht's hard work has placed him in conversations relating to the top middle infielders in the state in the Class of 2016. The 5-foot-10, 160-pound SS/2B flashed an 86 mph arm across the diamond and displayed much improved feet (6.97 60-yard dash). The right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and strides to closed. Fassnacht showcased an 85 mph bat exit velocity and turned heads with a barreled fly ball that was caught near the 400' sign in dead center field.
SS/3B Christian Fedko (Vincentian Academy), 2017
Fedko plays the game the right way, with energy. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound infielder showed developing arm strength (81 mph) and the ability to make plays on the move. There is some stiffness to his glove hand but the sophomore takes good routes to the baseball. Fedko hits from a slightly open stance with a leg lift stride. The right-handed hitter took a solid round of batting practice barreling the baseball routinely with a bat exit velocity of 84 mph. Fedko had two infield hits in game play and ran a 7.52 60-yard dash. Following a big freshman season of high school baseball and a solid showing at this event Fedko appeared at No. 10 in the initial PA Class of 2017 rankings.
SS/RHP Matt Gibson (New Castle), 2017
Gibson was one of a handful of 2017 prospects in attendance. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitter displayed a strong lower half from a square stance with a bat exit velocity of 84 mph in batting practice. Gibson squared the baseball routinely and showed a flat, short path to the baseball. Gibson currently shows defensive skills suited for 2B (76 mph arm), but the athleticism to potentially handle work on the left side of the infield at the next level. His foot speed (6.81 60-yard dash) could also prompt a move to the outfield. Gibson sat 76-78 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with some arm side run to his fastball and flashed a 66 mph curveball during his time on the mound.
2B/OF Zach Jacobelli (Penn-Trafford), 2016
Jacobelli is a 5-foot-7, 155-pound right-handed hitter has a weight shift approach to hitting that allows him to produce an 86 mph bat exit velocity, but at times he is late in getting to the hitting zone. His hands work well and he has the ability to barrel the baseball consistently when in rhythm. The junior displayed the ability to make plays on the move in the infield with a 79 mph arm across the diamond. Jacobelli ran a 7.09 60-yard dash and displayed capable actions as an outfielder as well.
SS/3B Corbin Kessler (Seneca Valley), 2016
Kessler is a 6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitter with a fluid swing and loose hands. The junior starts from a square stance and displayed the ability to square the baseball routinely with a bat exit velocity of 83 mph. Kessler went 3-for-6 in game play and ran a 6.74 60-yard dash. He will participate in the PBR Future Games later this month for Team Pennsylvania as a middle infielder, but displays the athleticism and foot speed to make the move to the outfield if called upon at the next level.
SS/3B Josh Kucmeroski (Monessen), 2016
Kucmeroski is a 5-foot-9, 165-pound infielder that has displayed the ability to play all positions on the diamond. The versatile left-handed hitter showcased loose hands and the ability to barrel the baseball routinely with a bat exit velocity of 83 mph during batting practice. He swings from a square stance with a toe tap trigger and showed good balance to his swing. Kucmeroski ran a 7.02 60-yard dash and displayed a 75 mph arm across the diamond.
2B/RHP Michael Kuypers (Central Bucks South), 2015
Kuypers is a 5-foot-11, 190-pound two-way prospect. The righty sat 82-84 with some arm side run to his fastball while commanding a 71 mph curveball with tight 11/5 rotation and a 75 mph changeup with late fade. Kuypers ran a 7.31 60-yard dash and went 3-for-6 in game action while registering an 86 mph bat exit velocity. The right-handed hitter's hands really work and a solid lower half leads to above average barrel whip. Kuypers displayed capable actions defensively at 2B and an 81 mph arm across the diamond.
2B/OF Brayden Lackey (Cedar Cliff), 2015
Lackey is a 5-foot-9, 155-pound left-handed hitter that plays the game hard. The junior ran a 6.81 60-yard dash and showed the athleticism to man both 2B and OF positions capably. He went 3-for-6 in game action with two triples while displaying the ability to drive the baseball to all fields.
2B/3B Bailey McGrath (Bridgeport, OH), 2015
McGrath displayed the ability to barrel the baseball with authority to all fields from a square stance during batting practice. The 5-foot-8, 185-pound right-handed hitter showcased an 87 mph bat exit velocity and went 2-for-5 with a double and a triple in game play. McGrath showed the capability to play 2B and 3B with a 78 mph arm across the diamond. The sturdy prospect ran a 7.34 60-yard dash.

2B/SS Nick Perilli (Berks Catholic), 2015
Perilli displayed improved arm strength (79 mph) and solid 2B skills with a quick release. The 5-foot-8, 170-pound right-handed hitter was only present on day two of the event but made up for lost time going 2-for-3 with a double. Perilli barreled the double to right center field and made a strong backhand play at 3B with a good throw across the diamond to cap his day.
SS/2B Adam Reed (Central York), 2015
Reed had a solid two days at the plate going 1-for-3 on day two and barreling the baseball with good rhythm to his swing from a square stance during batting practice. The right-handed hitter showcased a bat exit velocity of 81 mph and ran a 6.85 60-yard dash.
