Northern Catchers

Shooter Hunt
National Crosschecker

Continuing In the Weed’s look at catchers who have been undervalued or are potential late-bloomers, this week a group of six “northern” catchers take center stage. Each possesses the skill necessary to develop into a solid player at some level, and if given the chance to grow within a program, could become a key contributor in the future.

Adam Juran C / Sauk Prairie, WI / 2019

The little things about a player that you start to notice the more you watch and hang around can, sometimes, set him apart as a potential important piece to a program. Juran is one of those guys. A catcher who is constantly honing his craft and thinking the game, the more you hang around the dugout to listen to him talk/think the game, the more you want to have him leading your staff on the field. A solid receiver with loose hips and strong blocking skills, Juran works hard behind the plate for the betterment of the pitcher. The 6-foot-1, 175-pounder exhibits some natural strength, but should continue maturing physically in coming years. With more experience, I expect his current pop times of 2.05-2.17 to continue going down as he obtains more repetitions with the catch and throw. At the plate, the right-handed hitter is a bit more mechanical right now, and can get stagnant at times with his hands. However, he showcases the ability to use the entire field with a direct path to the ball, and just looks like a kid who is going to find a way to get it done. Overall, the intangibles stand out for Juran, and given the time to develop in a program at some level, he could elevate a team based on his mind for the game and willingness to get better.
