The Division I baseball season kicked off yesterday and a number of highly ranked PA Class of 2012 players made an impact on the opening day rosters of some of the elite programs in the country. Following is a look at how last year's top 12 prospects did on opening day.
|
- No. 1 ranked Joe DeCarlo did not play because he was selected No. 64 overall by the Mariners in the 2012 MLB amateur draft and opted to sign for $1.3 million. DeCarlo hit .236 in the Arizona Rookie League with four home runs and 31 RBI in his first season of professional baseball.
- No. 2 ranked Jake Drossner and No. 5 ranked Jared Price did not appear for the Terps in Maryland's 1-0 loss to LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisana. Both pitchers are fighting for a spot in a young pitching rotation.
- No. 3 ranked Karl Keglovits did not appear for N.C. State in the Wolpack's 6-3 opening day loss to Appalachian State in Raleigh, NC.
- No. 4 ranked Kenny Koplove did not appear in the Blue Devils' 4-3 win in Gainesville, FL over the Florida Gators.
- No. 7 ranked Danny Rosenbaum was the starter at first base for Louisville in a 2-0 loss to Indiana in Dunedin, FL. Rosenbaum went 0-3 in his first college appearance.
- No. 8 ranked Christian Helsel did not appear for Ole Miss in the Rebels' 1-0 victory over TCU in Oxford, MS. Helsel had originally verbally committed to TCU and later changed his commitment to Ole Miss.
- No. 9 David Rosenberger pitched the final two innings for Virginia in the Cavaliers' 14-4 win over East Carolina in Greenville, NC. He gave up one hit and one run while striking out two. No. 6 ranked Scott Williams did not appear for the Cavaliers.
- No. 10 ranked Matthew Smith did not appear for UCONN in their 11-8 opening day loss to Purdue in Dunedin, FL.
- No. 11 ranked Joe Ravert went 1-for-8 with a double and an RBI, getting the start at 1B for La Salle in both ends of a double header in Cary, NC. The Explorers beat Toledo 8-7 before falling 9-5 to Wright State.
