Inside the Rankings: Top 10 Class of 2022 LHP

Quick Hits: The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Lake-Lehman product is strong and thickly built with noticeable physicality in the lower half creating solid drive towards the plate. Commands the zone with a quick and repeatable high ¾ arm-stroke with some effort behind it while running the fastball up to 90 mph. Mixes in a late and sharp-breaking 82-84 mph slider showcasing two plane action at times, which has the makings of a true out pitch at the next level. Still needs to find feel for the third pitch, a 79-83 mph changeup thrown with quality sell, which currently lacks the command to be featured regularly. The right-handed hitter took a really impressive round of batting practice at the Northeast Pride Scout Day in February yielding loud pop to all fields while recording a bat-exit velocity of 101 mph. Exudes rare confidence at the plate with an advanced lower half and demonstrates some of the better barrel awareness in the class. 

First Glimpse: 2/16/19 Preseason All-State - 88-90 mph FB, 79-83 mph CH, 82-85 mph SL, 100 bat-exit velocity, 93 mph OF velocity, top performer.

Breakout Performance: 2/15/20 NE Pride Scout Day - 88-89 mph FB, 80-81 mph CH, 77-79 mph SL, 101 bat-exit velocity, 92 mph IF velocity, top performer.

The Future: The Louisiana State commit is extremely intriguing with the raw power he creates from the ground up allowing for clean arm action and precise barrel awareness to produce eye popping measurables across the board. The FB/SL combo is advanced enough to project for strike out numbers at the next level, but the addition of an above-average changeup would put him over the top. A true athlete in that frame with the ability to play first base and swing it as well, Federici should be a very close follow entering what has the makings of a monster Junior season.

Quick Hits: The 6-foot, 160-pound, left-handed pitcher is long limbed and continues to develop physically each time we see him. The Clarion Area southpaw is very athletic on the mound and throws four pitches from three arm slots commanding each with a purpose. Does not throw anything that is straight and maintains fluid rhythm and balance throughout the delivery, regardless of change in release point. Fastball typically sits 86-88 mph with arm-side run of varying degrees depending on the arm slot. Commands a 72-73 mph curveball featuring above average depth creating varying shapes depending on release point. Has shown excellent feel for a quality third offering in a 77-78 mph changeup thrown with advanced arm speed and significant arm-side fade.

First Glimpse: 8/02/18 PBR Junior Future Games - 79-80 mph, 65-67 mph CB, 74-75 mph CH, top performer.

Breakout Performance: 2/23/20 PA/NY/NJ Procase - 86-88 mph FB, 72-73 mph CB, 77-78 mph CH.

Quick Hits: The 5-foot-8, 175-pound left-handed pitcher displays advanced physicality in the lower half with easy athleticism in the movements making for a very intriguing option on the mound. Has professional bloodlines with both brothers being drafted by the Royals (Sal in the 11th round, Dante in the 6th). The Hazleton Area product looks ready to follow the family lineage touching 87 mph on the bump with explosiveness in the lower half and a live, high ¾ arm-slot allowing for natural cut at times. Tunnels a sharp 67-70 mph curveball out of the same slot featuring 1/7 shape and occasional two plane action. Commands a quality third pitch in a 76-77 mph changeup displaying occasional late depth when released out in front.  

First Glimpse: 7/13/19 MVP Blue Jackets vs. Rawlings Burn (National Scene) 2.1 innings pitched, 3 K’s. 

Breakout Performance: 2/15/20 NE Pride Scout Day - 85-87 mph FB, 67-70 mph CB, 76-77 mph CH, top performer. 

The Future: Currently uncommitted, Biasi has seen both brothers follow the blueprint for success and should be expected to do the same. The left-handed pitcher showcases natural movement on all pitches missing barrels with regularity and could reasonably add a couple extra ticks on the fastball due to the ease at which it comes out of the hand. With a true strikeout pitch in the curveball, Biasi should be considered as one of the better “sure things” in the left-handed pitcher rankings with ability to get even more talented on the backend.

Quick Hits: The 6-foot-3, 160-pound left-handed pitcher works 83-85 mph from a high 3/4 arm slot with heavy arm-side run to his fastball. Gets downhill well on the mound and has plenty of room to pack strength onto a long frame for added future velocity. The 71-72 mph curveball is a well above average pitch showing high spin and 1/7 shape while displaying some swing and miss potential at the next level. The changeup is thrown with good sell and arm-side fade at 70-75 mph, giving Fehrman a quality three pitch mix he can use to attack hitters. 

First Glimpse: 2/09/19 Bucks County Generals Scout Day - 78-81 mph FB, 66-69 mph CB, 68-72 mph CH. 

Breakout Performance: 2/15/20 Preseason All-State Southeast - 83-85 mph FB, 71-72 mph CB, 70-75 mph CH, top performer. 

The Future: Currently uncommitted, Fehrman brings to the table polished pitchability skills to go along with a very high ceiling and projectable frame which could mean a formidable jump in velocity is on the way. The Central Bucks West product warrants a close following and still possesses likeable qualities even if the improved strength doesn’t happen right away. Although he has an in-game track record of consistently getting outs and missing barrels, the lefty is still flying a little under the radar but won’t be for long.

Quick Hits: The 6-foot-3, 180-pound lefty is uber athletic on the mound utilizing a compact delivery and quick, high ¾ arm-slot to get downhill action on an 82-85 mph fastball with occasional cut. Pounds the bottom of the zone and mixes in a solid 64-66 mph curveball with late, 1/7 break to keep hitters off balance. The 71-72 mph changeup may be his best pitch featuring a tunneled slot and advanced deception with disappearing arm-side fade. With some projectability there in the frame and current electric hand speed on the fastball, you can see the surrounding excitement and don’t be surprised if he becomes the steal of the class. 

First Glimpse: 4/30/19 Dubois Central Catholic vs. Johnsonburg - Went 4 innings of no-hit ball en route to earning the win on the bump. 

Breakout Performance: 2/22/20 Preseason All-State SW/Central - 82-85 mph FB, 64-66 mph CB, 71-72 mph CH, top performer. 

The Future: Currently uncommitted, the Dubois Central Catholic product is primed to compete at the next level with three above-average pitches in the arsenal. Velocity should be on the way soon with room to fill out the frame and the expectation is that the secondary offerings will get sharper as well. Another high floor, high ceiling candidate, Sansom’s athleticism should allow him to get on the playing field at the next level earlier rather than later.

Quick Hits: The physical lefty demonstrates all the qualities you’d like to see in a starter with movement on three pitches and a ready to go 6-foot-1, 195-pound frame. The Dallastown product commands the fastball with precision, sitting 81-83 mph down in the zone with arm-side run. Counters with two above average secondary offerings; a 68-69 mph curveball with 1/7 shape and a 69-73 mph changeup featuring arm-side fade and advanced deception. The changeup has the ability to be a game changer and will keep righties off balance at the next level, which means scouts won’t have to worry about hurrying to add velocity. Can also swing it at the dish with a short and powerful left-handed stroke yielding hard contact to the pull-side and 88 mph bat-exit velocities. Active feet work well through the ball with feel around the bag at first suggesting possible two-way projection at the next level.

Breakout Performance: 3/01/20 Keystone State Bombers Scout Day - 81-83 mph FB, 68-69 mph CB, 69-73 mph CH, 80 mph IF velocity, 88 mph bat-exit velocity.  

The Future: Currently uncommitted, Ahr has the physical tools necessary to compete at the next level and has a multitude of ways of impacting the game. Although the arm isn’t as quick as it could be, the pitchability can mask any velocity deficiencies allowing Ahr to get on the field sooner rather than later. The changeup has plus pitch potential and if the curveball adds more depth, you’re talking about a strike thrower with two swing and miss offerings. The lower half strength is noticeable on the mound and the lefty should be a very close follow when baseball activities resume.

Quick Hits: The 6-foot, 175-pound primary southpaw is one of the better athletes in the class and possesses a very high ceiling in that frame. The lefty sits low-to-mid 80’s from a high 3/4 arm slot with some arm-side run to his fastball. Commands the curveball down in the zone at 68-70 mph showing 2/8 rotation with advanced feel for spin, which has a chance to be a swing and miss pitch at the next level. Slider has similar shape at 70-72 mph with more horizontal break and the changeup displays above-average feel at near-fastball arm speed sitting 74-77. That gives the lefty four usable pitches allowing him to work consistently in the zone making for an extremely tough at-bat against. A legitimate two-way prospect, the left-handed hitter generates loud contact (89 mph bat-exit velocities) to the deep pull-side of the field with quick hip rotation and twitch in the hands. The outfielder has a good drop step technique, allowing for gap to gap coverage in centerfield and has turned in a 6.85 60-yard dash time. Showcases fluid defensive actions with good carry to the plate on throws of 88 mph from his position. 

First Glimpse: 8/02/18 PBR Junior Future Games - 79-81 mph FB, 68-69 mph CB, 7.54 60-yard dash, 81 mph OF velocity, 82 mph bat-exit velocity, top performer. 

Breakout Performance: 2/16/19 Preseason All-State - 80-83 mph FB, 68-70 mph CB, 74-77 mph CH, 70-72 mph SL, 6.85 60-yard dash, 88 mph OF velocity, 89 mph bat-exit velocity, top performer. 

The Future: The Jim Thorpe Area product impressed at the Junior Future Games with polish in the repertoire and noticeable two way capabilities, making his commitment to Penn State soon thereafter. Since then, we’ve seen him add quality weight onto the frame allowing for more natural movements in the swing and extra balance in the delivery. With a very high ceiling and the possibility of being an impact player at two key positions, we really like the fit and expect Lordi to find his way onto the field sooner rather than later.

Quick Hits: The now 6-foot-3, 195-pound left-handed pitcher grew two inches and gained an upwards of 10 pounds of muscle since the last time we saw him. Where strength is added, velocity follows and there appears to be even more in the tank which is a good sign of things to come. Works from a funky, high ¾ arm-slot with natural arm-side run on a mid 80’s fastball showing quality command down in the zone. Mixes well featuring a disappearing 73-75 mph changeup with late arm-side fade and depth, but needs to demonstrate sharper movement on the curveball which displays cutter action at the moment. The ball still comes out of the hand easily on the fastball which should point to additional velocity in the near future to go along with a projectable frame that can hold 10-15 extra pounds yet. 

First Glimpse: 7/09/19 Eastern PA College Prospect Showcase - 76-79 mph FB, 70-71 mph CB, 67-68 mph CH. 

Breakout Performance: 2/08/20 Bucks County Generals Scout Day - 82-84 mph FB, 73-74 mph CB, 73-75 mph CH. 

The Future: Currently uncommitted, Brown has the makings of a guy that could have a huge Junior year and enter the spotlight. At the moment, the southpaw has a high ceiling and continues to get better each time we see him with more on the way in a frame that can get even more physical. The North Penn product still has room to refine the curveball, which in doing so would give him a legitimate chance to become a strikeout pitcher. The FB/CH combo has a chance to be lethal against righties and the LHP projects to get a lot of groundballs regardless at the next level with some of the better movement on his pitches in the class. 

Quick Hits: The primary left-handed pitcher features advanced flexibility in the arm-swing and a lean and athletic 5-foot-10, 155-pound frame with plenty of projectability. The southpaw works 83-85 mph with natural arm-side run out of a high ¾ arm-slot. The quickness in the arm stroke is noticeable and the ball gets on the hitter in a hurry. Commands a quality 72-75 mph curveball showcasing late downer action and 1/7 spin that has the makings of an out pitch at the next level. The athleticism jumps out in his 155 pound frame and with more strength in the lower half could see that velocity approach the upper 80's/90 mph. The two pitch mix for strikes works well right now for the LHP, but an above average third pitch would give Coleman the best opportunity to implant himself into a starting role early into his collegiate career.

Breakout Performance: 2/22/20 Preseason All-State Southwest - 83-85 mph FB, 72-75 mph CB, top performer. 

The Future: Currently uncommitted, Coleman possesses an uber-lean frame and should expect to gain additional velocity as he continues to fill out. The lefty has an extremely high ceiling with electric hand speed and pitches well in-game, as we’ve seen him countless times on the summer circuit with Flood City Elite. Attacks hitters early on in counts while putting them away late with the CB, & isn’t afraid to throw either pitch in any count due to above-average command of both. If scouts are looking for a solid rotation arm with a very good chance to boom in the near future, Coleman is your guy.
