Game of the Day: South Park at Belle Vernon Area

Up 3-0 and having allowed only three hits through five innings, the South Park Eagles looked like they were rolling toward a victory over Belle Vernon Area that would have drawn them to within one game of WPIAL AAA Section 4 leader West Mifflin Area. Instead, the Leopards scratched across one run in the bottom of the sixth and three more in the seventh for a 4-3 walk-off win that helped keep them squarely in the mix for a playoff berth.

South Park started the scoring in the initial frame, with its first three hitters sandwiching two singles around an error. A sac fly from Josh Wagner brought home the second run of the inning. The Eagles extended their lead in the top of the fifth on Anthony Winkler's second RBI knock of the game.

Belle Vernon finally got to South Park starter Brad Collas (5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 HBP, 8 K) in the bottom of the sixth inning, chasing him from the game after two hit-by-pitches, an RBI single from Mike Fine, and a walk. After Nolan Stulock (CG, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 8 K) set the Eagles down in order for the first time since the second inning, the stage was set for some late-game Leopard heroics.

For the second straight inning, the rally began with a hit-by-pitch. A single, an error that scored a run, and a walk loaded the bases, preceding a double play that tied the game. With a runner on third base and two outs Fine stroked a single on the first pitch he saw, neatly bookending the scoring for Belle Vernon.
