Game of the Day (May 30, 2019)
May 31, 2019
Pine-Richland 7, Penn-Trafford 2
Playing in its first WPIAL championship game in school history Penn-Trafford gave perennial contender Pine-Richland all it could handle before the Rams pulled away late for a 7-2 win. For the Rams it is their 6th title in seven league championship appearances since 2004.
Pine-Richland RHP Tommy Beam, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, gave the Rams a quality start working four innings while allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Senior Matt Schietroma worked the final three innings to pick up the save without allowing a hit.
Senior SS JD Armstrong, a High Point recruit, got the Pine-Richland offense jump started in the 1st inning with a two run double. Armstrong was also involved in the decisive 5th inning scoring on a triple by senior OF Jake Maley. Penn State recruit Matt Wood also had a big day at the top of the order going 2-for-2 with a triple and an RBI while also reaching three times via walk.
Both teams advance to the PIAA state tournament next week.
