Game Recap: West Chester East at Downingtown West

Downingtown West 10, West Chester East 0 (5 Innings)

Downingtown West (18-2) completed a spectacular regular-season run with a workmanlike win over West Chester East. The Whippets won their second consecutive Ches-Mont National title, while giving up zero or one runs in nine of their final ten contests, allowing more than three runs in a game only twice, surrendering just 37 runs total in 20 games, and suffering both their defeats by a single run. Single-elimination tournaments can be cruel, but this team has the characteristics of a championship contender with a deep pitching staff, disciplined offensive approach, and defense that catches the baseball.

Two Whippets pitchers combined to face only one batter over the minimum. Widener-bound right-handed pitcher Joey Zettlemoyer (3 IP, H, 3 K) allowed a base hit to the first batter of the game and then set the next nine hitters down in order to cap off a planned abbreviated start. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Drew Britt (2 IP, K) came on to retire the side in order in his only two frames.

Downingtown West sent at least six hitters to the plate in four of their five opportunities, highlighted by a six-run bottom of the second during which, at one point, seven straight hitters reached base safely. They tacked on two runs in the fourth and another two in the fifth for a walk-off, five-inning win.

The 3-4-5 hitters in the Whippets line-up -- junior catcher Nick Campana (2-4, 2 RBI), junior right fielder Mike Mollenhauer (2-3, 2B, BB, 2 RBI), and freshman third baseman Eric Grintz (1-1, 2B, 3 BB) -- paced the offense.
