Game Recap: State College at Cumberland Valley
May 4, 2018
On a day where Cumberland Valley recognized its senior class and the game time temperature was 91 degrees, it was senior right-handed pitcher Ryan Rudrow who stole the show. Coming into the game at 4-0 on the season and riding a 27 innings scoreless streak, Rudrow did not miss a beat.
Rudrow cruised through 6.2 innings, leaving with one out to get when he reached the maximum of 100 pitches in a game. The senior, ironically headed to State College himself next year to attend Penn State, allowed just five hits while walking one and striking out ten Little Lions hitters.
Rudrow's consecutive scoreless innings streak appeared to be in jeopardy in the 4th inning when State College outfielder Jack Hurley, a Virginia Tech commit, led off the inning with a double. After retiring Florida Atlantic commit Kevin Karstetter on a line out to second base and Penn State commit Tyson Cooper on a strikeout, Ryan Kraycik singled to put runners on the corners with two outs. Rudrow then buckled down and got Pennsylvania commit David Shoemaker swinging to end the inning.
Rudrow pushed his consecutive innings streak to 32 after a clean 5th, but with two outs a Cumberland Valley error allowed a State College run to score ending the streak at an impressive 32.2 innings to start the season.
Rudrow's recod improves to 5-0 with the win. On the season he has now yielded just one unearned run while striking out 43 and walking just seven batters.
Cumberland Valley was led offensively by Liberty commit Drew Baughman who was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and drove in a run. Lock Haven commit Zane Grimes was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Hurley led the State College five hit attack going 2-for-2 with the double. His replacement in the lineup, freshman Jack Wunz went 1-for-2 and scored the Little Lions' lone run.
Cumberland Valley moves to 13-2 overall on the season and 10-2 in the Mid-Penn Commonwealth Conference. State College falls to 5-9 overall and 2-9 in conference play.
