Game Recap: L-L League Quarterfinals

ELCO 6, Hempfield 5

Following a quiet 1st inning Elco and Hempfield offenses heated up in a hurry sending a total of 17 hitters to the plate in inning number two.

Elco strung together five one-out hits in the top of the 2nd inning to take a 3-0 lead, highlighted by an Aaron Deitz two-run home run. Hempfield answered right back scoring five runs of their own on five hits. The Black Knights were aided by three walks in the inning.

Elco tied things up with a two-run 5th inning and took the lead for good when Cody Good doubled to lead off the 6th inning and scored with one out on a fielder's choice off the bat of Cole Blatt.

Cole Miller, who began the game behind the plate moved to the mound in the bottom of the 4th inning and worked out of a one out jam with runners at first and second by getting a pop up and a fly out. Miller worked the final 3.2 innings for the win.

Travis Zimmerman (2-4, R, RBI), Deitz (1-3, HR, 2 RBI), Good (2-3, 2B, R) and Joe Ginder (2-3) led the Elco offense. The Raiders five through nine hitters were a combined 8-for-17 with four runs scored with three runs driven in.

Hempfield was led offensively by University of Scranton commit Tim Gailor (2-3, 2B, BB, R).

Elco moves on to the L-L League semifinals today at 4:00pm against Solanco, a 3-2 winner over Lancaster Catholic in 10 innings Monday. Both semifinal games will be played at War Memorial Field in Ephrata.

Penn Manor 3, Manheim Central 1

A potentially disastrous top of the 1st inning resulted in Manheim Central starter Chad Neely getting a strikeout with the bases loaded to escape with only two runs allowed. The inning started innocently enough for Neely as he induced back-to-back flyouts, but a Collin Whiteside single with two outs ignited a Penn Manor rally. Grant Gale followed with an RBI triple to the left-center field wall and then scored the second run of the inning on a single by Jeremy Burkholder. Neely walked the following two hitters before getting out of the inning with a punch out.

The Barons manufactured a run in the 3rd inning when Neely reached on an infield single and advanced to second when Bryce Eberly reached on catcher's interference. Neely scored when freshman shortstop Drew Mummau drove a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Comets added an insurance run in the top of the 6th inning when Eric Snyder led off with a double to left and scored on a single by Nate Brown.

The three runs were more than enough for California University of PA recruit Jake Herr. The right-hander allowed eight hits on the evening, but just one in the final three innings while striking out four.

The Barons spread their eight hits out among seven hitters with Eberly the only player to record a mult-hit game (2-4), one of which was the catcher's interference.

Whiteside (2-4, R), Gale (2-3, 3B, RBI, R), Burkholder (2-4, RBI) and Snyder (2-4, 2B, R) fueled the Penn Manor offense.

Penn Manor moves on to the L-L League semifinals today at 7:00pm against Ephrata, a 3-0 winner over Anville-Cleona on Monday.  Both semifinal games will be played at War Memorial Field in Ephrata.
