Two section front runners got together yesterday when Hempfield (8-2) hosted Garden Spot (5-3) in a Lancaster-Lebanon League crossover game. Windy conditions made for an interesting day on any ball that was hit in the air but despite the wind fans were treated to a walk-off thriller.
Garden Spot threatened in the first thanks to a hard hit single down the left field line by Anthony Torreulla but Hempfield's starting pitcher Alec Miller worked out of the inning with a ground ball and fly out.
Hempfield had a threat of its own in their half of the first inning thanks to Grant Oberholtzer (right) who singled and then stole second base for his first of three steals on the day. But Oberholtzer was left on base as Garden Spot's Josh Leid got the next two batters to strike out and pop-up.
Garden Spot put two runners on in the top of the second after back to back singles by Zach Skinner and Freddy Urena, but once again Miller got out unscathed after striking out the next hitter to end the inning.
The Black Knights pushed a run across in the bottom of the second after Tim Gailor worked a walk and then came around to score on a wild pitch for the first run of the game. They continued the scoring in the third inning as Oberholtzer singled again and promptly swiped second base again. He came around to score on a RBI single by Riley Workman.
Garden Spot finally answered with two runs of their own in the fifth after runners reached via a walk and and a hit batter and both scored after consecutive errors by the home team. Wyatt Miller came on in relief for Hempfield with the bases loaded and coaxed a fly out to finally end the inning.
Despite both teams threatening to score in multiple innings the score remained tied until the tenth. Angel Colon pinch hit to lead off the tenth and lined a pitch back up the middle for a lead off single. After a bunt single and a hit batter the stage was set for Oberholtzer to cap off his already outstanding day and the senior didn't disappoint. He lined a pitch into right field for a walk-off single giving Hempfield the 3-2 win.
Hempfield was carried offensively by Oberholtzer (4-4, 3 SB, 2 BB) and Workman (2-3, BB, HBP). Garden Spot was led by Torreulla (2-4, BB) and Skinner (2-2, BB).
Both teams are scheduled to be back in action on Wednesday as Garden Spot hosts J.P. McCaskey while Hempfield travels to face Lampeter-Strasburg.
