Eastern PA Top Prospect Games Spotlight: 2021 LHP Josh Beck
May 28, 2019
The Eastern PA Top Prospect Games annually showcases roughly 70 top uncommitted prospects across the state and from a few surrounding states. 2019 marks the 8th year for this event with hundreds of former participants having gone on to college commitments and to professional baseball.
As we draw closer to June we will be periodically highlighting some of the prospects scheduled to participate. Today we continue our preview with a look at 2021 LHP Josh Beck who will also represent Team Pennsylvania at the 2019 PBR Future Games in August.
Scouting Report
+ 2019 PBR Future Games Selection (Team Pennsylvania)
6-foot-6, 180-pound lefty with a very projectable frame. Sat 84-86 from a long armed high 3/4 throwing motion. Fastball showed arm side run and late life, but command was an issue as he worked to find a consistent release point. Curveball showed 1/7 rotation at 75-78. Changeup was thrown with good arm speed at 79-81 with late fade.
2/16/19
Projectable 6-foot-6, 180-pounder sat 81-82 from a high 3/4 arm slot with a low leg stack. A long arm takeaway and long levers leads to an inconsistent release point and some command issues at this point in his development. Delivery is controlled and far from max effort projecting for increased velocity in the future. Curveball shows 1/7 shape at 75/76 with some depth at times. Changeup is thrown with good arm speed but lacks any movement and is stiff at 78-79. Definite follow in this class.
7/10/18
6-foot-5, 175-pound primary pitcher sat 80-81 from a mid-3/4 arm slot with a long, loose arm action. Fastball displays some natural cut and was commanded will down in the zone. The lefty also showcased a 2-seam fastball with similar action at 79-81. The curveball has sweeping 2/8 break at 67-69 with occasional two-plane action. Beck also showcased a changeup at 75-76 at near fastball arm speed. The delivery is balanced and repeatable and significant velocity gains are likely moving forward. The left-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing from a high back elbow load with a lift-and-replace stride. The deep load leads to some barrel drag with a bat exit velocity of 83 mph. Beck ran a 7.62 60-yard dash and showed athletic actions around the bag at first base with 80 mph arm strength across the diamond.
