Widener University was the host for the Eastern PA Fall Review on an erratic weather day that brought sun, clouds, wind, and the occasional shower to the proceedings. Nonetheless, thirty-five participants made the trek to showcase their abilities. In the second of a series of profiles, today we look at the six corner infielders in attendance.
Ryan Besachio, LHP/1B, 2018, Upper Dublin
6-foot, 155-pound left-handed hitter. Hits from a square, upright stance and takes a short, lift-and-replace stride. Would benefit from strength gains to improve his ability to drive the baseball (he posted a 77-mph exit velocity) and from eliminating his top hand roll to help keep his barrel in the contact zone longer. Defensively, he logged 67-mph arm strength across the diamond and would benefit from fielding the ball further out front of his body.
Colin Birzes, 1B, 2016, Penncrest
6-foot, 220-pound left-handed hitter. Hits from a square stance with an uphill path intended to lift the ball in the air, an understandable approach given his below average footspeed and solid power potential (91-mph exit velocity). When he was on time, he showed an ability to drive the baseball to the opposite gap in BP, while staying through offspeed away in game action. Defensively, his range is limited, but he showed a soft glovehand and the ability to catch what he can reach.
Dillon Good, 1B/RHP, 2016, Ephrata Area
6-foot, 200-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from an open stance and strides to slightly open. Launched a towering home run over Widener's 30-foot left field fence, then followed up with a double to the opposite field gap, continuing a string of PBR events this summer at which he has demonstrated the ability to drive the baseball (94-mph exit velocity). Defensively, he continues to show solid actions and tools across the board.
Ricky Massott, 1B/RHP, 2016, Bensalem
6-foot-2, 215-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from a slightly open stance and strides to a square, wide base. Would better be able to tap into the power potential his frame suggests (he recorded an 82-mph exit velocity) by more fully incorporating his lower half into his swing (currently, his back heel retreats keeping his weight on his backside instead of driving it forward). Defensively, his range is limited, while he showed a solid glovehand and footwork around the bag.
C.J. Pluck, 3B/1B, 2017, Octorara
6-foot, 190-pound right-handed hitter. Hits from a slightly open stance with an inside-out approach. Would better be able to tap into the power potential his frame suggests (he recorded a 72-mph exit velocity) by more fully incorporating his lower half into his swing (currently, he has limited backside rotation, which inhibits his ability to transfer his weight). Defensively, he recorded 71-mph arm strength across the diamond, while he would benefit from more consistently playing lower to the ground and fielding the ball out front.
Seth Thomas, 1B/OF, 2017, Garden Spot
6-foot, 170-pound left-handed hitter. Starts from a slightly open stance and strides to slightly closed. Flashed some bat speed with a fairly short path and the potential for gap power (85-mph exit velocity). Closing himself off, at times, caused front hip to leave early in order to get bat into zone. Would benefit from strength gains to help consistently control the barrel at contact. Defensively, he showed good feet along with 71-mph arm strength.
